Monkey Gone To Heaven
Pixies (USA) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a guy
An under water guy who controlled the sea
Got killed by ten million pounds of sludge
From New York and New Jersey

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

The creature in the sky
Got sucked in a hole
Now there's a hole in the sky

And the ground's not cold
And if the ground's not cold
Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns, I'll get mine too

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

Rock me Jo

If man is five, if man is five, if man is five
Then the devil is six, then the devil is six
The devil is six, the devil is six and if the devil is six
Then God is seven , then God is seven, the God is seven

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

This monkey's gone to Heaven
This monkey's gone to Heaven

Overall Meaning

"Monkey Gone to Heaven" by Pixies is a song that features cryptic lyrics that are open to interpretation. It starts off with a reference to an underwater guy who controlled the sea but met his death when he got killed by ten million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey. The song then moves on to a creature in the sky that gets sucked into a hole, creating a hole in the sky. The lyrics suggest that if the ground's not cold, everything is going to burn, implying that the end of the world is near.

The chorus, "This monkey's gone to Heaven," is repeated multiple times and is open to interpretation. Some believe that the monkey represents the innocence of the world, and its departure signifies the death of that innocence. The song then goes on to reference man, the devil, and God. The lyrics state that if man is five, then the devil is six, and if the devil is six, then God is seven. This line suggests that everything in the world is related, and there is an order to the universe.

Overall, "Monkey Gone to Heaven" is a thought-provoking song that deals with themes of environmentalism, religion, and the interconnectedness of everything in the world.

Thanks to my Dad this song was a staple of my childhood. In 2017 I went to my first Pixies concert with my Dad. Front row of the mosh. Was bloody brilliant. We went again in 2020 just a week before New Zealand went into lockdown for the first time. Dad passed in June this year and we played this at his funeral at his request. I now have “this monkey’s gone to heaven” tattooed on my arm under a modified version of the Doolittle album art for my Dad. Miss listening to Pixies with him
