For What It's Worth
Placebo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The end of the century
I said my goodbyes
For what it's worth
I always aim to please
But I nearly died

For what it's worth
Come on lay with me
'Cause I'm on fire
For what it's worth
I tear the sun in three
To light up your eyes

For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth

Broke up the family
Everybody cried
For what it's worth
I have a slow disease
That sucked me dry
For what it's worth
Come on walk with me
Into the rising tide
For what it's worth
Filled a cavity
Your god shaped hole tonight

For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth

No one cares when you're out on the street
Picking up the pieces to make ends meet
No one cares when you're down in the gutter
Got no friends got no lover

No one cares when you're out on the street
Picking up the pieces to make ends meet
No one cares when you're down in the gutter
Got no friends got no lover

For what it's worth
Got no lover
For what it's worth
Got no lover
For what it's worth
Got no lover
For what it's worth
Got no lover
For what it's worth
Got no lover
For what it's worth
Got no lover
For what it's worth
Got no lover

Got no friends got no lover

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Placebo's "For What It's Worth" convey feelings of isolation, desperation, and a struggle to find meaning in life. The end of the century symbolizes the end of a significant period, and the singer has said their goodbye, perhaps to a loved one, a friend, or a significant event. Though they always aimed to please, they nearly died, which could imply either an actual near-death experience or a sense of feeling lost and disconnected.

The chorus "For what it's worth" is repeated throughout the song, indicating a search for value, worth, and purpose. The singer wants their lover to lay with them, claiming they are on fire, and they tear the sun in three to light up their lover's eyes. These lines could represent a passionate desire for love and admiration or even a willingness to sacrifice for the sake of their significant other. The lyrics "Broke up the family, everybody cried" suggest conflict and turmoil within the singer's family, which may have contributed to their feelings of isolation and longing. The line "I have a slow disease that sucked me dry" could represent a physical ailment, mental illness, or addiction, which could have also led to the singer's sense of despair.

Overall, the lyrics of "For What It's Worth" by Placebo deal with themes of desperation, loss, and the search for meaning in life. Through the repetition of the chorus and the raw honesty of the lyrics, the song conveys a sense of vulnerability and a longing for connection.

Placebo don't get the attention they deserve. They're a legendary band. Deep lyrics, beautiful guitar and bass and Brian's voice. I wish everybody gives themselves the chance to listen Placebo.

I have though the same thing for over 20 years...

@akirain3250

I agree! and plz check IAMX!You might love them. The frontman Chris Corner is also amazing and he was in Sneaker Pimps during 1995- 2002, who had sort of cooperated with placebo like playing live together. 🎉

@davidkingsland8297

I been riding with this group for over 10 years! God I just love music!

@thomasgronlund9186

They seek the attention too much. That’s why people don’t give it to them.
Sorry, the didn’t feel genuine and the songs weren’t good enough.
They had harder competition back then.
Had they released it today… maybe😊

@user-iq5bg3bq2b

They dont seek for attention, they said once we are a band of outsiders , songs like without you im nothing, 36 degrees or Bosco are not for everyone. The fact is most of the people are to shallow to like Placebo, they prefer bands like Muse or Coldplay, so i dont think they re underrated, they have the fans who really matters.
