So Different
Places To Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ah ha you broke the mold, you broke the code of being different
Ah ha you took control, you sold your soul to the ones that need that

You sang your song and I listened and now you're listening to me
You helped me find something that was missing
And what was missing was a song by me
Now you sing along with me, now you sing my song with me now
Ah ha you stole the show and the code you broke was never broken

Ah ha you let them know you're in the mold
The mold you took control of

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Places to Park's song "So Different" talk about breaking free from societal norms and being different. The first two lines of the song praise the person being sung about for breaking the mold and the code of conformity. The singer then mentions that this person sold their soul to those who needed them to be different. Overall, the lyrics of "So Different" express an appreciation for people who break free from norms and societal expectations, particularly those who do so while still being true to themselves.

Most Americans who haven't been abroad don't even know how anomalous their car dependency is.

Green Machine

not exactly true. Even if you go to New York City, San Francisco, or Savannah Georgia its easy to see how walkable they are compared to other cities or suburban places.

Tom

@Green Machine eh, I live in DC, one of the most walkable places in north america, and we still deal with far higher rates of pedestrians killed by errant drivers than the rest of the developed world.

Because DC, like New York, San Francisco and Savannah, is surrounded by suburban sprawl, and our streets are designed to prioritize suburban commuters rather than safe or pleasant neighborhood streets. And until quite recently, DC had the problem identified in the video, hundreds of acres of prime land dedicated to parking lots.

Even today, my car pays a whopping $50 per year to occupy some of our finite and precious public space. My rent, otoh, is, uhh, more.

American policy at every turn subsidizes automobile dependency.

Tom

Por ejemplo, Milton Keynes is a small city widely regarded in Britain as being their worst example of car dependent 1960s urban planning.

But if it were in the US, it'd probably rank in the top 10% in terms of walkability.

@Tom hello from a fellow Washingtonian. I’m a European expat, being living here for the last 6 years and I second every single statement you’ve just made about our so called walkable city. Dc is a city with superior architecture and wonderfully preserved green spaces, that being said its car centric design, (highway size roads forming a soul crushing grid), makes it very repellant from a European
perspective.

@Tom British people HATE Milton Keynes. That city is known to be a MASSIVE FAILURE that should never be repeated.

I think the root of the problem is commercial and residential zoning laws. People need to drive because everything is so far away and everything is so far away because people can't have markets where people live.
