They achieved some notoriety by creating a fictional history placing the band's origin in 1973, complete with a VH1 mockumentary that introduced mythical singer-songwriter Erin Grace. Erin, who bears an intentional resemblance to Stevie Nicks, is supposed to have written several of the songs when befriending Dave and Kara at different times in the past.
In 2006 Platinum Weird released numerous "1974" and "current" versions of their songs through Internet viral marketing, followed by three tracks on iTunes in July 2006, and a promo (free) EP CD in stores August 22, 2006. Their debut album is due out on September 19, 2006 in the USA, according to their free Promo CD liner, but stores do not have it. The Platinum Weird website states that the album "Make Believe" was released in US stores on October 10, 2006, and in UK stores on October 16, 2006. In the US, Best Buy stores are selling the album with a bonus disc included.

Is that the way that you are
Or are you shooting at the stars
From the gutter?
The things that you see
Are they the things that you can be
Or are you reaching out to me
Let's make believe
That we're all in this together
We're all in this together
We're all in this forever
Let's make believe
Tomorrow is a blur
And today I'm getting by
Traveling through the highs
Just the English boy and I
Let's make believe
That we're all in this together
We're all in this together
We're all in this forever
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Let's all make believe
Let's all make believe
Let's all make believe
Let's make believe
That we're all in this together
We're all in this together
We're all in this forever
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Let's make believe
Is that the way that you are?
Is that the way that you are?
Is that the way that you are?
Is that the way that you are
Or is it make believe, make believe, make believe?
The lyrics of Platinum Weird's "Make Believe" explore the idea of self-discovery and finding one's true purpose in life. The first verse portrays a sense of confusion and insecurity about one's identity. The question "Is that the way that you are?" suggests a lack of self-awareness, while the metaphor of shooting at the stars from the gutter implies a feeling of being lost or overwhelmed. The second verse suggests that this confusion can be overcome by reaching out to others who are also struggling with their own identity. The line "Are you reaching out to me because I'm bleeding on your life?" implies that by connecting with others, we can help each other find our way.
The chorus of "Let's make believe, that we're all in this together" encourages the idea of unity and support among individuals. It suggests that we can all work together to find our true purpose in life, and that this journey is an ongoing process that requires mutual encouragement and support. The final repetition of the question "Is that the way that you are?" implies that the journey of self-discovery is a complex and ongoing one, and that we must all work together to support and encourage each other on this path.
Overall, "Make Believe" is an optimistic and encouraging song that celebrates the power of connection and mutual support in the journey of self-discovery.

The things that you see
Are those things you can actually achieve?
Are they the things that you can be
Or are you limited in your potential?
Or are you reaching out to me
Perhaps you need someone to guide you?
Because I'm bleeding on your life?
Or is it because I can help you heal?

Let's pretend
That we're all in this together

Tomorrow is a blur
We can't predict the future
And today I'm getting by
We'll take it one day at a time
Traveling through the highs
Even in the good times
Just the English boy and I
It's just you and me
Let's all make believe
All of us should pretend
Is that the way that you are?
Are you really who you say you are?
Or is it make believe, make believe, make believe?
Or is it all just a fantasy?
