The group was formed in 1997 and disbanded in 2000. There are two follow-up projects: The Jelly Jam, effecively Platypus minus Sherinian and Jughead featuring Derek Sherinian, Ty Tabor and Matt & Gregg Bisonnette.
2) Platypus was a little known, short-lived disco-funk band that was active in the late '70s and early '80s. Formed in Dayton, Ohio, in 1978, the band consisted of Arthur Stokes (lead vocals, percussion), Kerry Rutledge (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Lloyd Jones (bass), Curtis Sanford (drums, keyboards), and Larry "Irfaan" Hines (lead guitar). They combined their appreciation of the Ohio Players and Parliament/Funkadelic with a lot of disco gloss and sometimes added rock elements. But unlike the Players or Parliament/Funkadelic, Platypus didn't use any horns. In 1978, the five member band signed with Casablanca, which -- shortly after Hines' life was taken by leukemia -- released its self-titled debut LP the following year. Cherry, a second album, was issued in 1980. Neither album sold, and the outfit broke up.

Platypus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can't see any different between them.
Morning. Midnight.
Bright star of my eyes is hiding from me.
Cry. Sometimes you make me cry over you.
Monday. One day. "Mayday".
I am calling out over the sea.
Cry. Sometimes you make me cry over you.
The lyrics of Platypus's song "Cry" convey the emotions of someone who is feeling lost and vulnerable in their relationship. The opening lines acknowledge the beauty of both sunshine and moonbeams but also suggest a confusion and inability to differentiate between them, which could be interpreted as a sign of disorientation and uncertainty. The next few lines mention morning and midnight, but the singer's focus is mainly on the "bright star" that is hiding from them, which could be a metaphor for their significant other or the love they once shared.
The chorus of the song revolves around the word "Cry" and how the singer's unnamed partner makes them cry sometimes. The verse also refers to Monday and Mayday, which may indicate a sense of hopelessness or desperation. The line "I am calling out over the sea" can be interpreted as a metaphor for the vast distance between the singer and their partner, or their inability to reach out and connect with them. The last line of the verse, "Water from my eyes is falling," reinforces the idea that the singer is crying and feeling overwhelmed by their emotions.
Overall, Platypus's "Cry" is a poignant representation of the pain and confusion that can come with love and relationships. The song's lyrics seem to suggest that the singer is struggling to hold on to a relationship that is slipping away, and their tears are a symbol of their inner turmoil.

what I like about platypus and the jelly jam, is that you can here the bass in the mix (unlike the newer dream theater albums, when you here it only when it has a mini solo) you could here the bass very well in awake though... anyone know who mixed it?

I'm assuming Ty Tabor mixed it as I think he mixes pretty much all projects he's on. I'd have to pull out the liner notes to confirm...yep, mixed and mastered by Ty Tabor at his home studio.
