Beat the Horse
Pomplamoose Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't you like what's on your plate? It's not free.
Shaking fists at this debate. Woe is me. Woe is thee.
It's all for show so please bake me cookies.
The stage lights glow and we stare like rookies.

Take your cause and pass it around.
Take one down and pass it around.
I'm not fair and you're not sound.
Pass it around now you're not sound.
Take your turn in beating the horse.
Take him down now take him down.
Gee I hope we're not off course.
Take him down now take him down.

Don't you like what's on TV? It's not free.
We'll agree to disagree. Woe is me. Woe is thee.

It's all for show. So please call this number.
You'll never know. And you'll always wonder.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pomplamoose's "Beat the Horse" can be interpreted as a commentary on the superficiality of modern society and the way that people often argue or take action without truly understanding the issues they are fighting for. The opening lines "Don't you like what's on your plate? It's not free / Shaking fists at this debate. Woe is me. Woe is thee" allude to the idea that people often take for granted the things that they have in front of them, while simultaneously feeling frustrated by the problems they see around them. The next couplet "It's all for show so please bake me cookies / The stage lights glow and we stare like rookies" expands on this idea, referencing the way that people often participate in performative protests or activism without really understanding the issues at hand.

The chorus of the song ("Take your cause and pass it around...") can be seen as a call to action, encouraging individuals to take ownership of their beliefs and advocate for them in a more meaningful way. The second verse ("Don't you like what's on TV? It's not free...") further reinforces the idea that people are often too passive in their engagement with important issues, instead relying on superficial media coverage to inform their opinions. The final couplet of the song ("You'll never know. And you'll always wonder.") can be seen as a poetic conclusion to the themes explored throughout the song, suggesting that in a world where so much is uncertain, it is important to take agency and ownership over the things that matter to us most.
