Portugal. The Man centered on frontman John Gourley’s abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley’s innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change.

The album's title was inspired by an original 1969 Woodstock music festival ticket stub owned by Gourley's father. It led Gourley to a realization that almost 50 years later, music has the same mission as then – "to comment on societal and political unease." "We worked with so many rad people on this album, but ended up with just the four of us in a basement at 4 a.m. trying to say something that mattered," said Gourley. "Trying to write music that would help people feel they're not alone, even if they're angry or feeling lost." Woodstock was released on June 16, 2017. John Gourley and Zoe Manville married on New Year's Eve 2017.

My knuckles thrown from deep down, deep in the earth
Crush it down, let it burn
I spiked the punch with the weight of the world
This little laser beam
I'm gonna let it be
These broken dreams are fallen leaves
Cheer up now
Nana, nana, nana na
Nana, nana, nana
Nana, nana, nana na
Nana, nana, nana
You see my eyes got that glow
My pupils dilated like a bomb 'bout to explode
Cut me loose, don't let me go
Turn it up, up, up, system overload
This little laser beam
I'm gonna let it be
These broken dreams are fallen leaves
Flailing on the ground
Cheer up now
This little laser beam
I'm gonna let it be
These broken dreams are fallen leaves
Quit flailing on the ground
Cheer up now
Nana, nana, nana na
Nana, nana, nana
Nana, nana, nana na
Nana, nana, nana
(Cheer up)
Cheer up, the end is coming
And everybody's here
Cheer up, the end is coming
And all we have is here
Nana, nana, nana na
Nana, nana, nana
Nana, nana, nana na
Nana, nana, nana
The song "Cheer Up" by Portugal. The Man is about finding hope and optimism in difficult times. The first verse talks about planting one's feet in the dirt, symbolizing grounding oneself and finding stability amidst chaos. The line "spiked the punch with weight of the world" implies that the weight of the world is a heavy burden that everyone carries, but the singer is determined to overcome it. The second verse describes the singer's intense energy and readiness to explode, which could represent a desire for change or action. The chorus repeatedly urges listeners to cheer up, even when life feels overwhelming.

Max, I guess evil friends, was great purple yellow red and blue, by far one of my favorite songs from them
@maxiguess2291
Vinny H. I honestly feel like Danger Mouse has a tendency to make a band sound flat and unimpressive when he produces an album, but Evil Friends is the biggest exception to that for me
