Formed in 1989 by college friends Zabrecky and Celso Chavez (guitar), the pair took their name from a suspected murderer mentioned on television show America's Most Wanted. Initially performing as a duo, they mixed haphazard punk-folk compositions with store-front theatre to some measurable success, primarily performing at LA art/coffeehouses (Be Bop Records, Jabberjaw, Pik-Me-Up). The following year, longtime friends and former schoolmates Robert O’Sullivan (guitar/organ/keyboards) and Rich Truel (drums) were enlisted and together a fuller musical range was explored. Chronicling their hometown's east side slacker life with a pop-rock sensibility, the band smartly incorporated influences from the Talking Heads, Human Hands, Wall of Voodoo, Dream Syndicate and Camper Van Beethoven.
By 1992 Possum Dixon had logged a number of mini-tours and produced a number self-released 45" singles and cassettes which included "Music for a One Bedroom Apartment", "Nerves", "Watch the Girl Destroy Me", and a three single box-set released by Pronto Records. Along the way a strong following was built and eventually the band found themselves part of a flowering LA art and coffeehouse scene.
Secretly rehearsing by night in a warehouse (where Zabrecky worked as a mailroom clerk by day), hiding their equipment with boxes when they finished, the band diligently polished club-tested material and assembled what would become their first full length major label debut. They eventually found internal harmony without consciously trying. Chavez's disjointed guitar playing wasn't for lack of trying; O'Sullivan's piano crashes weren't for lack of talent. Truel's drumming and Zabrecky's spy-infused bass riffs were all part of a bigger picture about a band who found their own voice from the close confines of practice and proximity to each other in their daily lives. The band also wasn't without lending a helping hand. Beck, a young anti-folk singer with nothing to his name but a beat-up guitar, would frequently get up on stage before the band played to test his latest material. Zabrecky later recorded a bass track on his first Geffen release, Mellow Gold.

But it's Sunday night.
And flight five-five-seven's arrived.
She tells me she's filled buildings with history on 22nd Street...she's
not invisible.
My head aches.
Echo park turns to silver lake.
Where Millie's diner is closed today.
I close my eyes and I masturbate.
I close the door because I'm afraid he'll see me.
I'm bored.
She thinks of big blue whales while she's biting her fingernails.
She writes plays I read paperbacks.
They've just begun 3D picnics, electric sun.
I don't care where you're coming from.
He's up there on the 8th floor and he's falling from the speakers and his head
has smashed to the ground.
And everytime you leave me call to love you I gotta go just watch me drown.
And to somedays dry.
We're going to Ransburg.
It's hotter than hell there.
We're invisible, and we're bullet-proof.
We're invisible, and we're bullet-proof.
The song "Invisible" by Possum Dixon is a complex piece that features various themes and motifs. The lyrics are a blend of surrealism, existentialism, and nostalgia. The song begins with the singer lamenting their current state, stuck in an airport on a Sunday night. They wish it was summertime, a season typically associated with fun and freedom. The song then shifts focus to a stranger they meet at the airport, who tells them of the history they've made. The stranger is confident in themselves and doesn't see themselves as invisible. The singer, on the other hand, is struggling with self-acceptance and a sense of loneliness.
The song then transitions to a scene where the singer is in Echo Park, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. They close their eyes and masturbate, which could signify a moment of escape or a coping mechanism. The singer is bored and uninspired, in stark contrast to the stranger with the building-filling history. The song then takes a symbolic turn, with some imagery that's hard to decipher. There's a mention of "big blue whales" and "electric sun," which adds to the surreal, illogical nature of the song. The chorus of the song, "We're invisible, and we're bullet-proof" seems to be a declaration of strength and resilience, despite feeling invisible to the world. The song ends on a somewhat ominous note, with a reference to a falling speaker and the singer drowning when their loved ones leave them.
