Combining an average joe sensibility along with syrupy west coast beats, clever samples, and witty rhymes Potluck's weed inspired song topics include everything from life and loves tribulations to neck-snapping battle raps.
Back in 1995, 1 Ton, who originally hails from San Diego, and UnderRated, who was born and raised in Humboldt, met at a dj trial. "We were the two tightest djs there, so it was natural we hooked up," remembers UnderRated about the first encounter.
Despite the fact that they were from different backgrounds, 1 Ton is African-American and UnderRated is Jewish, the two formed a musical chemistry as Emcees, Producers, and Djs which translated into some of the best club and house parties Humboldt has ever seen.
In 2000, the group released their debut album "Humboldt County High." They distributed the record themselves up and down the West Coast through a label they formed, called Lost Koast Productions.
In Humboldt, "We became so popular, we were selling more albums than Brittany Spears," smiles 1-Ton, about the groups early days. Songs like the weed inspired "Humboldt County High" and the more serious "Whats Your Purpose" catapulted Potluck into the mix of up and coming West Coast rappers.
Potluck went on to release 2 more full length Cds: 1. Potluck "Tha Lost Koast Kollective" (2002) a compilation album featuring Potluck with underground MCs from Brooklyn, NY. to Humboldt County, Ca. and 2. Potluck "Harvest Time" (2005) which features collaborations with Tech N9ne, E-40, The Mystik Journeymen, and Equpito.
Currently Lost Koast Productions and Suburban Noize Records have teamed up to bring you Potluck "Straight Outta Humboldt" which is primed to go down as a marijuana lovers classic. It has appearances from Kottonmouth Kings, The Luniz (I got 5 on it), Tech N9ne, and a host of others. It is scheduled for release Summer of 2006.
To date Potluck has toured the U.S. and performed with the likes of Too $hort, E-40, Atmosphere, Tech N9ne, Lloyd Banks, Living Legends, Bone Thugs, J5, Andre Nickatina, Blackalicous, and Kottonmouth Kings.

Bitches love me. *Burp*
Rule number one.
18 to 25 women age like cheese;
Men age like wine.
Rule number two.
My expectations of lovely people aren't very high. *cough* *spit*
Rule number three.
Rule Number four.
Every woman is a whore, until she becomes your girl, then its all good.
Rule number five.
If you wake up in the morning and you find tampons where your q-tips and razors used to be you know somethings gone drastically wrong with your life.
My names Joe brown,
Bitches love me.
Man this being Fat is rough,
I don't know if i can do this no more.
The song "Meet Joe Brown" by Potluck is a heavy-hitting commentary on societal expectations and double standards in relationships, particularly between men and women. Joe Brown, the persona created in the song, spouts off a number of rules or guidelines for how women should be treated and viewed, most of which are derogatory and disrespectful. The opening line, "Bitches love me," sets the tone for what's to come, as Brown positions himself as a ladies' man who has the upper hand in relationships.
The first two rules that Brown lays out speak to the idea that women have a shelf life, and that men only get better with age. The comparison of women to cheese and men to wine is not only crude, but it's also completely inaccurate and ignores the fact that people of all genders can age gracefully and beautifully. The third rule takes aim at American women specifically, implying that they are not deserving of respect and that they should look to other cultures to learn how to act properly. Brown's fourth rule perpetuates the harmful myth that all women are promiscuous until they're "claimed" by a man, which is incredibly offensive and untrue. Finally, the fifth rule is more of a joke than anything, but it still serves to underscore the overall theme of the song, which is that women are not to be taken seriously and that men are in charge.
Overall, "Meet Joe Brown" is a disturbing and unsettling song that reinforces harmful stereotypes and attitudes toward women. It's important to note, however, that the song is a commentary on these issues rather than an endorsement of them. By creating the persona of Joe Brown, Potluck is shining a light on the fact that these kinds of beliefs exist and are often internalized by men. It's up to us to challenge and reject them.
