Moody Blue
Presley (Elvis) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Bettin' on the number
That changes every time
Well, you think you're gonna win
Think she's givin' in
A stranger's all you find
Yeah, it's hard to figure out
What she's all about
She's a complicated lady, so color my baby moody blue,
Oh, Moody blue
Tell me am I gettin' through
I keep hangin' on
Try to learn the song
But I never do
Oh, Moody blue,
Tell me who I'm talkin' to
You're like the night and day
And it's hard to say
Which one is you.
Well, when Monday comes she's Tuesday,
When Tuesday comes she's Wednesday,
Into another day again
Her personality unwinds
Just like a ball of twine
On a spool that never ends
Just when I think I know her well
Her emotions reveal,
She's not the person that
I though I knew
She's a complicated lady, so color my baby moody blue,
Oh, Moody blue
Tell me am I gettin' through
I keep hangin' on
Try to learn the song
But I never do
Oh, Moody blue,
Tell me who I'm talkin' to
You're like the night and day
And it's hard to say
Which one is you.
In the song "Moody Blue", Elvis Presley sings about the complicated nature of a woman who he is trying to figure out. He compares her to a gambler betting on a number that keeps changing, saying that just when he thinks he's going to win her over, she slips away and he's left with a stranger. He struggles to understand her, as her personality seems to change from Monday to Tuesday and so forth, leaving him feeling lost.
Throughout the song, Elvis expresses his frustration at not being able to "learn the song" and understand this woman. He acknowledges that it's hard to say which side of her is the real her, likening her to night and day. In the end, he resigns himself to the fact that this woman is a complicated lady, and he can only color her moody blue.
The song is a melancholy ballad that showcases Elvis's smooth vocals and emotional delivery. It's a poignant reminder that love is not always straightforward, and sometimes we find ourselves lost in the complexities of another person.

It's very hard to listen to Elvis without tearing up or just plain crying & feeling such a loss in this ever changing world. The good days, the good times, but never again.... Even the appreciation of people has changed.... Hard to imagine a life without Elvis Presley being a household name...
