Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

That you felt like you were the
Only one in this world?
Have you ever wanted to play
With someone so much you'd take
Any one boy or girl?
Talk to me, ravish me
Liberate my mind
Tell me what you think of me
Praise me, craze me
Out this space and time
Between white and black, night and day
Black night seemed like the only way
So I danced
Music late, nothing great (Music late, nothing great)
No way to differentiate (No way to differentiate)
I took a chance
Gregory looks just like a ghost
And then a beautiful girl the most
Wets her lips to say
"We could live for a little while
If you could just learn to smile
You and I could fly away, fly away"
Anna Stesia come to me
Talk to me, ravish me
Liberate my mind
Tell me what you think of me
Praise me, craze me
Out this space and time
Maybe, maybe, maybe I could learn to love
I mean the right way, I mean the only way
Perhaps you could show me, baby (show me, baby)
Anna Stesia come to me
Talk to me, ravish me
Liberate my mind
Maybe, maybe, maybe I could learn to love
If I was just closer to somethin' (closer)
Closer to your higher self
I don't know
Closer to heaven (Maybe) closer to God (closer to God)
Save me Jesus, I've been a fool
How could I forget that you are the rule
You are my God, I am Your child
From now on, for you I shall be wild
I shall be quick I shall be strong
I'll tell Your story, no matter how long (no matter how, no matter)
We're just a play in Your master plan
Now, my Lord I understand
(I understand)
Love is God, God is love, girls and boys love God above
The song “Anna Stesia” by Prince is said to be partly inspired by Prince’s spiritual beliefs, as well as the concept of self-love and acceptance. The lyrics are deeply introspective as Prince sings about being lonely and wanting to connect with someone so badly that he would take any boy or girl. The name “Anna Stesia” is a play on the phrase “anesthesia” suggesting that the presence of this person might numb his emotional pain.
Throughout the song, Prince talks about being caught between different extremes, such as white and black, night and day, and love and loneliness. He speaks of dancing despite feeling like there is no differentiation between the music and how he feels. Despite these internal struggles, Prince calls out to Anna Stesia to come to him, to talk to him, to ravish him, and to liberate his mind. He wants her to praise him, and even to craze him. He believes that being with her could mean freedom from his current state.
This song can be seen as Prince’s search for personal enlightenment, as he seeks for love, acceptance, and understanding. He sings about finding a place beyond space and time where he can be himself, without any fear of judgment. The song encourages listeners to embrace and love themselves, and to find that one person who can help them connect with their higher self.

Lord Jesus, come to my rescue. My foolish behavior has led me to forget that you are the one in charge. You are my God and I am your child. Going forward, I will be uninhibited and vigorous, spreading your gospel no matter how long it takes. We are all just actors in your plan, now I comprehend. Love is the divine force, the higher power, and children of all sexes adore God above.

One of my favorites of his. So much soul and funk and it makes my heart ache. After thousands of hearings it never gets old. How does one create such a powerful arrangement of voices and instruments? It seems impossible. This man was touched by God.
