Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Te'Vaun this is Nana, I miss you so much
LA is so far from me, you take care of yourself okay
I love you bye bye
Home, home baby I'm home I'm home I'm home
Home, home baby I'm home I'm home I'm home
Home, home is where the hatred is
I could come back and never see another day again
Home where your friends turn frenemies
Damn how you turn to my enemy
You was just at the crib last night
Back in elementary we rode on bikes
And you was right beside me for my first fight
Who would ever thought you would take my life?
Now I’m laying here with a whole in my back
Blood on the concrete my lungs collapsed
I’m looking in the sky wondering good lord why?
Mama came crying, my first born gone die
And like Hov ima let the song cry
Everybody in the hood they can recognize
You always told the truth you ain’t never lie
And it’s sad to say this songs a lullaby, home
Home, home baby I'm home I'm home I'm home
Home, home baby I'm home I'm home I'm home
H.O.M.E I L.O.V.E
All the kids back home they wanna be like me
Bringing back the soul beats being on tv
Springfield Ohio, I know y’all need me
If anybody fall on hard times we gonna lookout
Get the fam together we gonna have a cookout
Ain’t nothing like that good soul cooking from Nana
And that one drunk uncle always starting some drama
What about them summer sleep overs?
Playing hide n seek when the cousins be over
Sitting in Sunday service in the back of the church
I love where I’m at but my home come first
And I’ will do anything just to see ya’ll smile
I’ll always come back even if it take a while
When I come back I’m like Jerome’s in the house
For now, Ima take a bow I’m out

Home, home baby I'm home I'm home I'm home
Home, home baby I'm home I'm home I'm home

Overall Meaning

The song "Home" by Prince is a tribute to his hometown and the memories he has of growing up there. Through the lyrics, Prince expresses his longing for home and the sense of belonging that he finds there. The song opens with a voicemail from his grandmother, which highlights the distance between Prince and his family, both geographically and emotionally. He then reflects on the paradoxical nature of home, where memories of friendship and innocence exist alongside the reality of violence and loss. The death of a childhood friend is a central theme of the song, and Prince mourns the loss while also celebrating the man's life and honesty.

One of the most interesting aspects of "Home" is the way it blends different genres and musical styles. The soulful R&B vocals are combined with a hip-hop beat and hints of gospel music, creating a unique sound that is both contemporary and timeless. The song also features samples from other songs, including "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" by Gil Scott-Heron and "T.R.O.Y." by Pete Rock & CL Smooth. These nods to classic hip-hop and soul music add depth and context to "Home," anchoring it in a rich tradition of Black music.

Another fascinating aspect of "Home" is the way it juxtaposes the experiences of Prince's childhood with his current success as a musician. He acknowledges the fame and fortune that have come with his career, but also asserts that his true home is with his family and community. This sentiment is captured in the lines "H.O.M.E, I L.O.V.E / All the kids back home they wanna be like me / Bringing back the soul beats being on TV / Springfield Ohio, I know y'all need me." Through his music, Prince is able to bring the values and traditions of his hometown to a wider audience, while also staying connected to his roots.

YES, pure legend. Prince we lost you wayyy too soon, but believe you will NEVER be forgotten from your amazing songs, that transcended any race, song lyrics that just made us get up & dance, songs that made us smile, songs that made us wanna make love, and songs that made us cry. Thanks to YouTube, your music will live on forever. You didn't have an easy life, but you didn't let it show. You just kept performing thru all the pain-- mental or physical. None of us realized the damage you were doing to your body-- we couldn't tell you were in so much pain-- you commanded that stage with your moves, no one could've ever known the pain you were enduring thru each performance, you just pushed thru the pain & gave your audience what they wanted. Just so heartbreaking that none of realized how bad the pain really was. You were just the consummate performer in every show you did. I just Googled the word "consummate" to be sure I was using the word in the right way. The definition is, "showing a high degree of skill and flair, complete and perfect". That most definitely describes you to a T. You blasted onto the scene in the 80s and completely changed R&B for us. And speaking of complete, perfect skill, you also commanded that guitar in such a powerful way. You just made all of us fall madly in love with you. You were such an ICON. An icon that will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
WE STILL MISS & LOVE YOU PRINCE....
YOU WERE & ALWAYS BE
ONE IN A MILLION.

I was in love with Prince. He was a man of many talents. He was handsome & gifted with music. I recall back in the day when I frequented concerts that he performed at. His music was pure & he always had insight on issues before they surfaced; that's what his music was about. He is truly missed, but not forgotten. I continue to listen to his music because it takes me down memory lane to remind me of the love that I lost too soon. He was the greatest artist in my era & I will be eternally grateful for his magnificent work. May you rest in peace, but your music will always be uplifting to your fans.🎶🎶
