Some of you may not want to know

Please don't try to stop us
For, we come regardless for we are strong as we are intelligent
So come vibe with us, welcome to the Funk Bible
The new testament

People get ready, nouveau dance here
All the girls and all the boys
Get close, have no fear (have no fear)
We're gonna do le grind y'all
Uh, got you where I want you
And girl it's going to feel so good (feel so good)
Up and down, up and down, on the beat y'all
Like a pony would, pony would

Le grind
All the boys, grab a girl, get down on the floor, ooh
This funky beat's gonna show you
Gonna show you what your hips are made for
Uh, nouveau grind, come on

(Time to do the grind)

Ce soir, la chantez, all night long

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Prince's song "Le Grind" express a desire to dance and party all night long. The song is upbeat, energetic, and funky, encouraging listeners to let go of their inhibitions and embrace their dancing abilities. The lyrics mention a "nouveau dance" and invite all girls and boys to "get close" and "have no fear" as they dance to the beat. The song also includes some flirtatious lines, with Prince boasting about his ability to do tricks that his lover's boyfriend could never do. Prince invites listeners to vibe with him, saying they are here to do service, and welcomes them to the "Funk Bible," the new testament.

Overall, "Le Grind" is a song about losing oneself in the music, experiencing the joy of dance, and living in the moment. The song encourages listeners to let go of their worries and embrace the feeling of being alive. The lyrics are passionate, playful, and unapologetically funky, like much of Prince's music.

Too bad this didn't get released as the actual followup to Sign o' The Times, killer record

Inspire

You wouldn't have got Lovesexy. Now we get both..

Chi Chi

I thought it did get released but Prince had them all pulled from stores because he was under the influence of Camille Shockadelica when he recorded it

Stephen King

The reason given at the time from release being pulled was that 'spooky electric' (referenced a year later in 'eye know') had influenced him. Is why on the cover of Lovesexy Prince is naked (reborn) and lots of lyrics throughout the songs reference his faith. The truth however is likely more commerical: the Black album didn't hold a light to Sign O The Times and Prince feared it would be a commerical failure. He did play songs from the Black album on his Lovesexy tour. Personally I love the Black album but it isnt as high a watermark as Lovesexy.

Sean Maher

@Stephen King Just read your opinion and it's compelling. I understand Black was to be his return to black music. Then Lovesexy was the album because he feared dying with Black and it might be his last and he thought it was bad juju. But it's likely (sadly) you’re right about commercialism. The thing is - I think Lovesexy (specifically) is the most insanely brilliant album Prince has ever written. It's utterly, cripplingly brilliant. I miss and yearn for The Revolution - but this album is...

Sean Maher

@Stephen King Also, you mention "eye know" as the influence. I thought the shadow was 'spooky electric'. Why do you link the two? I don't.
