Overall Meaning

The song "Poem" by Prince starts with an introduction that mentions two individuals from different parts of the world - Royal Prince Kizzouk from Zambia and Agnes Cawlyd from the United Kingdom. The first verse speaks about someone who came into Prince's life from afar as a visiting stranger. Although there was no thought of danger, the help the individual asked for was generously given, and in exchange, they pleaded for fishermen to leave their nets and travel across the world to hear wondrous tales. The verse ends with the repetition of the line "You came into my life from afar," emphasizing the distance and foreignness of the individual.

The chorus invites the listener to "follow me" to different places and situations, including encounters with queens and kings, shepherds and flocks, collectors of taxes, and women at wells. The second verse refers to someone whom Prince believed had won the hearts of many only to be let down and left without care when their face was smashed against the wall. Despite being remembered with loving kindness, the person is said to have died for the price of a kiss. The chorus repetition wraps up the song.

You... are not..... Black... Well thanks for that captain obvious lol but seriously, I mean I've been called white and pink in my life. Never one time did i find that racist or offensive, often it gave me a giggle, and I just don't really care what colour people want me to label with. You know why??? Because the moment you choose to be offended by someone else's judgement/assumption, that makes negativity. It's not necessarily negative, until you do this in fact.

What you choose to do in your life, and your decisions, effect your path. If it doesn't matter what colour skin we have, and these differences don't matter, we probably shouldn't be making videos claiming it does.

I would call you brown. Probably not like a name, and for no reason to your face, I mean why would I?

Not that it makes any difference to your life or mine. That's the colour i see you as mostly. If I was colour blind, you might be grey. These trivial things don't have to be a big deal. They don't have to be a dedicated youtube video, with slow, dramatic piano music. Call me whatever colour you like. Label me whatever tags you wish. You're still my brother, and any other human being on this planet I see as my sibling/family.

It's long due time we stop talking about skin colour like its a big deal, we remove any and all groups which segregate and package us up VIA skin colour (aka BLM) It's long due time we start expressing all lives matter, be proud of who you are, not what skin colour you have, it's irrelevant.

The worlds got an infinity of real problems, but skin colour's not one.

@lailayas

I am not Black
I mean, thatโ€™s what the world calls me, but itโ€™s not... me
I didn't come out of my mother's womb saying, โ€œHey everybody, I'm... Black.โ€
No, I was taught to be black
And you were taught to call me that
Along with whatever you call yourself
Itโ€™s just a.... label

See, from birth the world force feeds us these.... labels
And eventually we all swallow them
We digest and accept the labels, never ever doubting them
But there's one problem:
Labels are not you and labels are not me
Labels are just ...labels
But who we truly are is not... skin... deep
See, when I drive my car, no one would ever confuse the car for.... me
Well, when I drive my ....body, why do you confuse me for my... body?
It's.... my ....body....get it? Not me

Let me break it down
See, our bodies are just cars that we operate and drive around
The dealership will call society decided to label mine the "black edition,"
Yours the "Irish" or "White edition"
And with no money down, 0% APR, and no test drive
We were forced to own these cars for the rest of our lives
Forgive me, but I fail to see the logic or pride
In defining myself or judging another by the cars we drive
Because who we truly are is found inside

Listen, Iโ€™m not here to tell you how science has concluded that genetically weโ€™re all mixed
And race in the human species doesn't exist
Or how every historian knows that race was invented in the 15th century
To divide people from each other and it has worked perfectly...
No.... I'm not here to lecture
I just want to ask one question
Who would you be if the world never gave you a label?
Never gave you a box to check
Would you be White? Black? Mexican?
Asian? Native American? Middle Eastern? Indian?
No. We would be one; we would be together
No longer living in the error
Of calling human beings Black people or White people
These labels that will forever blind us from seeing a person for who they are
But instead seeing them through the judgmental, prejudicial, artificial filters of who we THINK they are
And when you let an artificial label define yourself
Then, my friend, you have chosen smallness over greatness and minimized your.... self
Confined and divided your .....self from others
And it is an undeniable fact that
When there is division, there will be conflict
And conflict starts wars
There-fore every war has started over labels
It's always us... versus them
So the answer to war, racism, sexism, and every other -ism
Is so simple that every politician has missed it
Itโ€™s the labels...
We must rip them off
Isn't it funny how no baby is born racist
Yet, every baby cries when they hear the cries of another
No matter the gender, culture or color
Proving that deep down, we were meant to connect and care for each other
That is our mission, and that it's not my opinion
That is the truth in a world that has sold us fiction
Please listen, labels only distort our vision
Which is why half of those watching this will dismiss it
Or feel resistance and conflicted
But, just remember...
So did the cater-pillar
Before it broke through its shell and became the magnificent butterfly
Well, these labels are our shells and we must do the same thing
So we can finally spread our wings
Human beings were not meant to be slapped with labels like groceries at supermarkets
DNA cannot be regulated by the FDA
We were meant to be free
And only until you remove them all
And stop living and thinking so small
Will we be free to see ourselves and each other for who we....TRULY.... are

24yrukdesigner sorry to tell you, but if you never felt the judgemental looks of People only because you happen to walk thru the "wrong" neighbourhood or you hold hands with your girlfriend and she is "white" you should think close about what He says. I'm "mixed", born and raised in Germany and trust me i've got my fair share of racism every Day.
it starts with People Talk in english to me cause they asume i can't speak german and it get's even more racist when I Start talking german and they say: your german is great.
Those People dont think they did some wrong and dont recognize the lable they Put on me.
Racism and lableling is the dumbest thing of all Time and you know why: when I cut my finger and you cut yours, the blood is the Same colour, EVERYWHERE on earth.
