The recipient of numerous awards and nominations, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. He was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona; his wide vocal range, which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams; and his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound. His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, and hip hop.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.

After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.

Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

you will experience the same effect with the 8 square glass from IKEA, hit it with the clay, plate, the rough spot that feels so scratchy, on a rounded spot I think (sorry it went so fast, the explosion is several meters wide, among other things I penetrated a 2 meter away monitor, the explosion turns the glass into almost exclusively white little blobs some of which are as big as sand.

Hi. Love your videos. This one is great ... but there's a lot of room for improvement with regard to your epoxy processing. 1) Use an appropriate epoxy: The one you are using is meant for surface finishing in thin layers. Making big quantities in deep sections is a bad idea, as the exotherm will be so high, the cure will be uncontrollable, and a fire risk. 2) Mix, mix, mix! Mix until clear, then transfer to another container, and mix some more. 3) Removing bubbles with a vacuum only results in boiling of one of the epoxy components, changing the ratio slightly. Probably won't make much difference, but all those bubbles coming out of the epoxy are not trapped air bubbles. I would LOVE to see one of those results sawn in half, and put under a microscope!! Keep up the good work.

Use a mixing nozzle, dump first bit out from nozzle then feed from the bottom of mold. Use a epoxy with slower set time that will help with the bubbles and exothermic run away.

You should try deep-pour slowcure epoxy resin next time. It's less exothermic and allows more time to get the right viscocity.

A deep pour epoxy is necessary for how big the box it. On resin systems made for shallow pours or to be used specifically with a fiber reinforcement (i.e carbon or glass) pouring too thick makes the exotherm much higher, it also changes the gell time of the resin. With a deep pour resin you would need a control on what the gel time is. Also, mixing with the drill is introducing too much air into the resin which is causing longer degassing times

It's also really important to actually measure your resin/hardener mix accurately instead of pouring both in at the same time. There's a reason it's 1:1, or 2:1, etc.

Next time just cover the top of the surface in more fresh epoxy or something right before its broken, so it will cover any inlet for air. so if its pulling air in it would just pull more epoxy and change the effect. if its internal stress then it would be the same.

I believe that the cracking of the tail allows air into the internal structure of the drop and due to the way the drop is formed I speculate that there may be a void that was formed inside the drop from the internal glass retracting after the outer glass already hardened. My logic in this reasoning is that the outer shell is like a container for the rest of the expanded glass and as it cools off it retracts and the molten glass either creates a pocket that would normally fill immediately with air if air was present or stretch out the molten glass as it retracts forming void bubbles in the stretched glass due to there not being enough material to fill the gaps that were made present when the internal glass retracted. So when you break the tail due to the air being pulled into the internal structure the force of the air filling the voids is enough to start shattering the walls that would be between the nearby pockets which creates the effect of the drop exploding out from the tail towards the middle of the drop. Due to the most void pockets being present in the middle of the drop, the force of air filling that space causes an outwards explosion. That is just my thought on the matter and what I believe may possibly be happening. It would be difficult to test if this were the case because you would need to test breaking the tail in an area that is void of any oxygen such as breaking the tail in a vacuum. The idea comes from the way water being poured from a bottle and how if you hold an open bottle upsidedown it is slow to pour the contents out because the air rushing into the bottle to fill the void behind the liquid also partially blocks the opening at the neck of the bottle and how the void needs to be filled first before the liquid can leave the bottle or container.

Fun fact about exothermic epoxies (and bread dough): they succumb to a mass effect where the processes of kicking/curing and fermentation are accelerated in areas of concentrated mass. Usually thats a consideration for large production, but now I see it can be a pain in small rpecise batches too. :P

im thinkin having two molten glass rods have them touch and then separate for a molten string between the two and then have em drip off like a normal drop. though theyd probably have three tails, one connecting them both and two from the drip, but i think that should create pretty much a two headed drop.

Three recommendations here:
- Try letting the resin fully harden, I'm curious if the shockwave is powerful enough to shatter the hardened resin.
- Try ballistics gel instead of resin. This should more fully capture the 3d visualization of the drop shattering.
- Try clear gelatin, as the ballistics gel may be slightly too hard to allow the glass shards to travel through it.

I loved this video and am fascinated by just how FAST these things shatter!

I'd like to propose 2 possible improvements to this;
1 try using a gel, gelatin, ballistic etc.
2 try pouring low viscosity colored liquid, alcohol inc for example and maybe the exploded drop will suck down color rather than air, for more contrasting exploding structure as well as maybe a visible inside:)

as someone who works with epoxy resin, you really need to mix it all at once so there are no streaks in it, so some of the resin is more mixed than the rest so that might be why you're having viscosity issues

What an awesome experiment! You were working with the very tool that would do what Hooke was trying to accomplish and that's the high speed camera.
Perhaps instead of using epoxy, you could use plain old clear gelatin. Or super cooled water which will freeze instantly when agitated.

If you do this again you might try resin meant for casting. This kind of epoxy is formulated for making strong thin surfaces, and as you found can kick unevenly from self-generated heat.

@SmarterEveryDay I think that epoxy resins of any flavor will be MORE problematic than some other alternatives. I'm going to concur with the opinion of several others here, and suggest that you use 10% equivalent clear ballistics gel. Better effects could be seen from a very high purity gelatin in a 10% mix but you'll never be able to escape that amber color, even with synthetic traditional gelatin. It would be worth experimenting with these, however.

@Blacktronics I noe wonder if you used a softer gel and let it set what would happen if you cut some away before popping it. For instance what would happen if you put a straw down to the thick end? Would the glass be pushed through the straw? Could you cut one side of the gel away before you popped it? You would get a clear video but would the explosion happen uniformly?

Seems to me that epoxy is just too dense, though there were some nice ones in there as well. Aerogel can be used to capture space debris, but I don't know exactly how much you'd need to stop the Prince Rupert Drop explosion. Something in between like ballistic gel might be better.

The benefit would be that you would allow the gel to finish setting before setting off the explosion, so it would be as homogeneous as it can be. Downside is you don't wind up with a semi-permanent sculpture as a keep-sake.

Epoxy resin is the third most frequent cause of occupational allergic dermatitis - in other words, your body will learn to produce an allergic reaction with repeated exposure. The first batch wasn't mixed nearly enough because you won't see any streaks if it is fully mixed, and the heat it creates from curing accelerates it's curing speed almost like a runaway reaction such as a nuclear reactor meltdown so it is very difficult to precisely calculate the exact time it will start to solidify but not be too solid to insert the glass drop into it. That "perfect hardness" stage is only about 3 seconds when starting with epoxy that is 70F. You can greatly slow the reaction by keeping it colder so if you did this when it was 40F outside (or do this in a walk-in refrigerator) you could increase the "perfect hardness" stage to maybe 30 seconds or even 60 seconds because you'd be reducing or eliminating the exessive heat it creates which makes it harden too fast above a certain temperature. Of course a much easier solution would be using slower-curing epoxy which creates far less immediate heat build up which would eliminate the problem of the runaway exothermic reaction, but I was just giving my two cents to help with the epoxy you had on hand.

Came here to say this. The resin wasn't mixed thoroughly before pouring, and pouring that much resin at one time creates a ton of heat during the cure. He also should not mix with the drill, just mix by hand until the epoxy is clear and scrape the sides for crissake to get all the unmixed resin in it. Degassing also isn't really an effective way to get bubbles out of resin completely, it needs to cure under pressure, not vacuum. Also, resin - especially unmixed - is not the sort of chemical you should be getting on your bare skin, wear gloves and a respirator! Honestly this experiment could be awesome but he needs to spend 10 minutes learning about epoxy resin and how to work with it appropriately.

I have a question: how strongly can the explosion of the drop itself accelerate the curing of the epoxy? The thicker it is, the more friction and more heat in the same spot, right? So it might make the sort of shot they were going for impossible?

Yes, thick epoxy pours are hard due the accelerated exothermic reaction. If you want to try this again perhaps Alumilite or Total Boat could help by providing their expertise. Either way thanks for the awesome content, keep it up.

i love these. Destin you ought to try coating it with a thicker layer or layers of epoxy, let it harden, then break it in something that contains the explotion, like water or something with more viscosity, may be you can obtain a good image... although the shockwave might break the hardened layer of epoxy.

If you fill a few boxes at the same time (like 20 or so) and then snap the drops in order, there surely there must be one with the effect you are looking for. You just need the perfect timing.

Clear ballistic gel could help you with the perfect amount of goopyness. It's real easy to cast, and you can set the "springback" very accurately.

@Chad Wilson It's like pouring urethane. By carefully controlling the ratio between casting solution and hardener, you can arbitrarily set a final shore harness. It's how they can make skate/longboard wheels so consistent. Only difference is ballistic gel is on the softer side of the shore scale, and it's usually engineered to be as transparent as possible to allow for better viewing of bullet paths.

Hi Destan, you mentioned you could see air flowing into Rupert's drop, just wondering if it's possible that when the drop is created that there is a vacuum created throughout the center and when the tail is fractured is let's the positive atmospheric pressure enter and travel to the end of the drop causing it to shatter along the way. Just a thought.

Something I'd love to see attempted with these would be a mechanism that you could add the molten glass to, and it would drip the glass into a water chamber while still holding onto the tail. Could you create perfectly straight drops? Would their properties change at all? May require making the water chamber deeper as well.

One more: If you used an ultrasonic chamber (or ultrasonic device just added to the chamber) like those used to clean delicate parts without abrasion, could different frequencies influence the strength or other properties of the drops as they solidify?

I feel that you should just use clear ballistic gel! I don't foresee it having the force to move it and you have the option to set them in and allow it to fully solidify around it and see the force and reaction through the gel!

I was just going to say Ballistic gel, but it's not super stable afterwards...depending how long they want to keep it. If Taofledermaus gets the Bait Gel stuff to be clear instead of yellow it would be a better substitute than Ballistics gel to have a frozen exploded PRD.

Have you thought of using an air tank as a reservoir for vacuum? That way you can create a vacuum much faster by simply opening a valve to an already decompressed tank.

I think to best capture separate fragments of the PRD you'll want to use a "Bingham Plastic" fluid. These types of fluids are solid at low shear stresses but liquid at high shear stress. If you can find the right fluid it should hopefully be thin enough to shear during the explosion and then become solid immediately as the explosion slows.

@MendTheWorld Thixotropic is a related term where the viscosity is time-dependent after a force is applied. These is some overlap with these fluid categories. Common Bingham plastic fluids are mayonnaise and toothpaste. I'm not sure of a Bingham plastic fluid that would be suitable for this experiment. Maybe a certain kind of molten polymer?

Does the reverse exist as a sort of shock-sensitive epoxy? Something that will be a slow-cure resin under normal conditions, but give it a good shockwave and it solidifies immediately and with enough recovery time/hysteresis to hold the fragments in place until the resin can fully cure?

but yeah, there was no way it was ever going to work until it was completely solid.
epoxy as a gel or liquid isnt strong enough to hold anything, let alone the exploding force of a PR Drop. lol.

You should consider “deep pour” epoxy. woodworkers used it to fill large voids and comes clear as glass… they tend to take much longer to set that this finishing epoxy, but it should set with a more even viscosity and it should give you a larger window of time to work with…. I love your videos

Ok so I was watching the shockwave of the straighter drop, and I was thinking, could you put that in a tube of sorts, seal off the tail end and shoot out a projectile of sorts to measure the force. I'm not sure how the technical side would work on that but I'm sure you would have a bunch of fun figuring it out.

Would be cool to take one after it's all solidified, seal a top on it, throw a color changing LED diode on the end and see how it shoots like through the exploded drop. Bet that would look cool. Might have to find one that I could do that to!

I'd love to see the effect on the resin if you allowed it to cure completely before breaking the tail of the PRD. Would the shock crack the epoxy, or would the force be contained?

That epoxy has a compression strength of about 9 to 15 thousand psi. Depending on the brand it definitely won’t become a bomb!! It won’t even crack

@Ebeneezer Squid thats not what they were trying tho. Once its hard it doesnt have that viscosity anymore that allows them to see exactly whats going on. Basically it would break similarish to when broken without the resin id presume.

That, I believe would give them the ideal for the results they were looking for, I think. They should have suspended a drop in the liquid epoxy, and kept it in the vacuum chamber until it hardened. THEN, when they broke it, it would give them an ideal view into the shatter distribution.
Depending on the epoxy used, it might crack, but I doubt it would shatter or become a bomb simply because of the much greater mass of epoxy used.

One thing I note is that the reaction from the cutting starts not at the cut but at the very end of the glass. Clearly this is harmonic in nature - high to low frequency and at a guess it equals the harmonic. Very interesting.

You could try some optically transparent silicone or other similar materials. It might allow for more expansion but have enough holding power to contain the basic shape of the prd. You could try to explode one in the silicone before it sets up, and another in the silicone after it cures.

I've often wondered if it would be possible to use heat to melt away the tail so you're left with just the super durable head of the drop. Don't know if heating the tail would cause the drop to explode or not but it would be an interesting experiment.

My wife was screaming at you for “doing it wrong” with regards to the epoxy. Her point being that you’re mixing it way too fast which is causing the epoxy to cure too quickly (also causing the larger exothermic reaction). There would be fewer lines in the epoxy and it should have more of the viscosity your seemed to be going for.

@TheHue's SciTech dude thank you! It doesn't matter how fast he mixes it if he's going to vacuum all the bubbles out. It DOES matter that he used a coating epoxy and not a deep pour epoxy. That's why it smoked and hardened so fast. Also, you should definitely not breathe that in. 😬

@Doyle4 You're all missing this line in the instructions for Famowood Glaze Coat, the epoxy product used in this video: "Do not pour more than 1/8" thick in an application." The reason they have this instruction is because it will overheat unless it's in such a thin layer; all they had to do was use a product with a longer cure time designed for thick layers, i.e. casting epoxy resin. Because he's casting, not adding a glaze coat.

The surrounding medium (in this case, epoxy) has to absorb the released energy. I would be curious to see how that energy absorption happens in various media--water, gelatin, PMMA, alcohol, oil, etc. In what way does the viscosity affect the energy release of the PRD? Does the medium heat up? What happens if the entire drop is submerged, including the tail?

Interesting experiment! I'm curious to know why you didn't simply suspend the PRD in the liquid epoxy and let the epoxy harden completely before breaking the tails. Would not the shattering still occur and yet be completely contained with no air ingress? Also, there are resins used in making resin encapsulated artworks that are crystal clear, both after the vacuum stage and after they are fully hardened. These can also be polished afterwards to reveal a truly crystal clear object with no heat distortions (see Ben's Worx).
