Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

The Morning Papers
Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Naive in every way
Every schoolboy's fantasy she was
That's why he had to wait
If he poured his heart into a glass
And offered it like wine
She could drink and be back in time for the morning papers
They could take a walk down the ocean side
Make a wish on every wave
They could find a carousel and ride
Or kiss in every cave
They could contemplate the entire universe
Or just one star
Oh just how far was the walk for the morning papers
Hey, let me play it for you one time, oh oh
Well
Hey
Shucks
Why is age more than a number
When it comes to love?
Should we ask the ones who speculate
When they don't know what it's made of?
Should we ask the moonlight on your face
Or the raindrops in your hair
Or should we ask the man who wrote it there in the morning papers?
Should we ask the moonlight on your face
Or the raindrops in your hair
Should we ask the man who wrote it there in the morning papers?
Oh yes
Somebody help me sing it now
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la, la
Oh yeah, hey, woo
Yes
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la, la
Gon' 'head
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la, la
Ok
The Morning Papers is a love ballad sung by Prince where he talks about a girl who is new to love and is naive in every way. He sees her as every schoolboy's fantasy and that's why he had to wait for her. He compares his heart to wine and says that she can drink it like wine and still be back in time for the morning papers. Prince speaks about the various things they could do together like walking on the ocean side, riding a carousel or contemplating the entire universe. The final verse of the song is where Prince questions the idea that age is more than just a number when it comes to love. He asks if we should ask those who speculate about it or should we ask the moonlight on her face or the man who wrote about it in the morning papers.
Line by Line Meaning
He realized that she was new to love
He discovered that this woman was inexperienced in the ways of love.
Naive in every way
Completely lacking in awareness or knowledge of how love and relationships work.
Every schoolboy's fantasy she was
This woman was the embodiment of every young man's dream.
That's why he had to wait
He knew he needed to be patient with her and wait until she was ready to love him back, rather than pressuring her.
If he poured his heart into a glass
If he were to express his deepest feelings in a tangible manner,
And offered it like wine
And presented it to her like a fine vintage to enjoy,
She could drink and be back in time for the morning papers
She could consume it and still have enough time for the mundane routine of daily life.
They could take a walk down the ocean side
They could stroll along the beach beside the sea.
Make a wish on every wave
They could indulge in the whimsy of wishing upon each passing wave.
They could find a carousel and ride
They could discover a merry-go-round and enjoy a ride together.
Or kiss in every cave
Or they could embrace each other tenderly in every cove they stumbled upon.
They could contemplate the entire universe
They could reflect upon the vastness and wonder of life and the universe itself.
Or just one star
Or they could simply bask in the beauty of a single shining celestial body.
Oh just how far was the walk for the morning papers
It's rhetorical; the singer isn't really concerned with the distance between where he is now and the place he'll ultimately go to buy his morning newspaper.
Why is age more than a number
The singer is grappling with why people make a big deal out of age when it comes to romantic relationships.
When it comes to love?
Asking why romantic relationships are so heavily influenced by age.
Should we ask the ones who speculate
The artist wonders if he should question the people who put so much weight on age-based romance rumors.
When they don't know what it's made of?
If those people don't actually understand the components that make up love.
Should we ask the moonlight on your face
The singer suggests that they should inquire to the natural elements and aesthetics of the moment, like the light of the moon highlighting a partner's features.
Or the raindrops in your hair
Perhaps they should direct their fascination towards those romantic visual details, like the rain on their loved one's hair.
Or should we ask the man who wrote it there in the morning papers?
Alternatively, they could rely on the gossip and rumors circulated by the media, like the author of sensationalist pieces in the newspaper.
