Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinรฉad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Turn Me Loose
Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I been thinkin' 'bout you for a very long time, yeah (hahaha, Nene)
Let me talk my shit
know you had it rough but you also love it rough
Put your hands behind your back and show me how you clutch
When I'm feeling low I take drugs to turn me up
and if I'm feeling low show me how you turn me up
Cause I got way too much inside my system
I got way too much inside my system
I got way too much inside my system
I got way too much inside my system
20 racks inside my pockets I might blow it all
The way I'm spending money niggas think I'm showing off
My bitch a dime and you can't find her I can't show her off
I can't get bit by those piranhas I gotta move precaution
I see 'em peeking in my window
I might just let 'em in
got body bags for all my opps
I'm just trynna get 'em in
I stomp when I walk but they don't know when I'm stepping in
Let my pistol talk it clarifies what I represent
These niggas wanna take my life I feel it in the air
I feel em creepin' down my block I gotta be aware
I know the day gon' come and when it do I'll be prepared
The reaper knocking on my door I swear this shit ain't fair
So I keep a clip filled up with hollows
Put some in my bottle, 'cause you ain't going home tonight
And for all I know I might not make it home tonight yeah yeah
So what's gon' turn me up
When you bring up all them bitches' man
I swear that turn me up, when I gotta move suspicious man
I swear that turn me up, when I put some in my system man
I swear that turn me up
I can't let 'em know my art of war, before I ever learn
I gotta hit the hardest wall
I love to finish shit that's why I never start 'em all
You push me down I kick you down who had a harder fall
I love my sprite with a shadow in it
I sent them demons but I ain't know that you was battling em
Ya bitch boat could get rocked if I got my paddles with me
Before I milk 'em niggas I make sure my cattle with me
I would fuck ya friend but I don't, you got a fatter pussy
knock it out the park like I brought different batters with me
I know how to step my shit up
Like I walk around with ladders with me
Had different options to fuck over but it had to be me
And every time y'all fuck me over y'all be flattering me
Yeah
You know how to make it all about you
All about you
So I keep a clip filled up with hollows
Put some in my bottle, 'cause you ain't going home tonight
And for all I know I might not make it home tonight yeah yeah
So what's gon' turn me up
When you bring up all them bitches' man
I swear that turn me up, when I gotta move suspicious man
I swear that turn me up, when I put some in my system man
I swear that turn me up
The lyrics to the song Turn Me Loose by Prince depict a birthday celebration and an egotistical attitude that comes with being a rising rap artist. The artist's "girl" promises to engage in a sexual encounter, but he values his own status more, saying he will "get to go bang bang" by performing well. He also takes pride in his success and wealth, โI got money with my stage name,โ and takes shots at other artists with โSneak dissing yo claim to fameโ and โImma take yo favorite rapper and imma make him retireโ. Towards the end of the song, he reflects on his growth as an artist, emphasizing the importance of the game in which he is playing and his desire to be the "greatest of all time".
The lyrics reflect the common themes of braggadocio and partying that are often present in the hip-hop genre. The references to sex and wealth demonstrate the stereotypical "rockstar" lifestyle that is associated with the hip-hop image. The artist's desire to be the greatest of all time is also a common theme in the rap genre, reflecting the competitive nature of the industry.
