Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Yo girl said she’ll throw it back, I told her do it on a Thursday
But she a ho, if I do it right, imma get to go bang bang
But since it’s my birthday, getting litt with my chained gang
I got sauce in my mane frame
I got money with my stage name
I’mma sign a shirt with my name
Sneak dissing yo claim to fame
I don’t got no Reggie brain
Walking 'round with a neck chain
‘Cause I got it for my birthday
Yeah this beat is fire
Imma take yo favorite rapper and imma make him retire
All y’all niggas got mega cars but y’all don’t got no tires
If you ain’t catch on, it’s word play for, never mind
From the beginning my purpose of rapping was playing a game
It started out as an experiment
Then through time, it turned to an actual thing
CT was born
CG was born
The process of this was a hazardous storm
We had some tough beginnings but
Now I have really opened a door
Now I have really opened a door
Coaching the game, but playing on court
I started on rapping
I guess I was sick
Contagious my nigga it started to spread
Starting to spread, it took some time
I ain’t mad nigga, it’s all fine
When it’s all said and done
I gotta be the greatest of all time
The lyrics to the song Turn Me Loose by Prince depict a birthday celebration and an egotistical attitude that comes with being a rising rap artist. The artist's "girl" promises to engage in a sexual encounter, but he values his own status more, saying he will "get to go bang bang" by performing well. He also takes pride in his success and wealth, “I got money with my stage name,” and takes shots at other artists with “Sneak dissing yo claim to fame” and “Imma take yo favorite rapper and imma make him retire”. Towards the end of the song, he reflects on his growth as an artist, emphasizing the importance of the game in which he is playing and his desire to be the "greatest of all time".
The lyrics reflect the common themes of braggadocio and partying that are often present in the hip-hop genre. The references to sex and wealth demonstrate the stereotypical "rockstar" lifestyle that is associated with the hip-hop image. The artist's desire to be the greatest of all time is also a common theme in the rap genre, reflecting the competitive nature of the industry.

Woman overboard, everybody on the ground
10 toes goin’ up, 10 toes goin’ down
Got the gun pointin’ at ‘cha
We’re never gonna cut our hair
(Come here, let me cut that hair) No!
Gotta, gotta
(My body wanna tell U 2 take control)
(This way 2 this purple soul)
Oh, pretty mama, I think I wanna ride
Sophie, 4 God’s sake
If U touch the television, I’ll kill U Sophie
Sol, can U please change the channel 4 God’s sake?
I don’t care, leave it alone, sit down!
I can’t stand David Letterman, he looks like a banker
U don’t have 2 watch Dynasty 2 have an attitude
Leave it all up 2 me, my love will be, will be your food
Everybody will have short hair
Let’s cut it, mama! (Pretty mama)
I think I wanna ride
Put the daddy in the front seat, me and the girl outside
I just want your extra time and your ..... kiss
Oh my God, isn’t that Prince on television, Sol? {fade out}
OK Sophie, it’s obvious
No, wait a minute, I bought this television
Why’d... why U ruin it 4 me 4 God’s sake?
Is he the strangest lookin’ thing U’ve ever seen or what?
U wanna talk strange Sophie? OK, let's talk strange
Sol, don’t U touch that channel!
Leave it alone, Sol!
Sophie, U’re strange, I’m changin’ the channel
Sol, do U... do U value your life?
Sit down Sol!"
