The recipient of numerous awards and nominations, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. He was known for his flamboyant, androgynous persona; his wide vocal range, which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams; and his skill as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play all or most of the instruments on his recordings. Prince produced his albums himself, pioneering the Minneapolis sound. His music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including funk, R&B, rock, new wave, soul, synth-pop, pop, jazz, and hip hop.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.

After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.

Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Ahhhh, he wasn’t that good. Everyone had plenty of years to hear exactly how good he was. This video is a perfect example. Yes, professional level and high quality. Also, very derivative, meandering, unfocused, repetitive and Strictly forgettable. Nothing special, or even particularly memorable. Prince certainly got his due as a musician, and then some. Could you tell this was Prince, if you didn’t know it already? No it sounds exactly like 10,000 other guitar players who also could play generic riffs like these for hours on end in their sleep. Prince’s songwriting and personality put him where he was. At the pro level, he was a very mediocre, if competent, guitarist.

@Doug Cameron He was good but people comparing him to Hendrix or van Halen is absurd. He was indeed, in the main, a showman. He let himself down with all the effort he put into manufacturing his myth.
The "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" performance at the 2004 Hall of Fame is a classic case: he claimed on his tour bus that he didn't know the Beatles Sgt Pepper album when it got played and his band members and crew were stunned that he didn't know it; he was invited to play the 2004 televised performance months before and was told which track; he claimed he'd never heard WMGGW before, despite him playing and performing several Beatles songs; he played low key in the rehearsals; then acted as though he spontaneously made up his solo on the spot although it contains motifs from the original.
The truth is that it's inconceivable that he didn't know WMGGW just as he knew Whole Lotta Love; he practised like hell before the performance; this was his chance to out-perform Clapton who played on the original; he feigned disinterest in the rehearsal; he made the most of making an impact when it was televised; his security were on hand at exactly the right time to help with his planned fall back into the audience. It was all staged.

@Scott Waszak he said underrated not "best but no one realizes"... he is indeed veryyy good and especially considering his songwriting, singing, vision, production, and stage presence.. it's quite noteworthy and in that sense his guitar playing is definitely underrated because people don't point it out much for some reason (i would agree that it's a mistake to say things like "most ever", "of all time" or "best"). His guitar style is pretty unique, has variety, he's fast, has feeling, nice chord work even... and just damn good jams.

Things to take from this: Prince knew the song, deeply; knew how it was performed live by Led Zep, and how Jimmy Page worked the guitar, deeply; knew the ins and outs of it, knew the things to keep and the things to draw from and the things where there was space. And that's true every time -- every time -- he takes on another person's song, whether it's Joni or Dave Grohl or whatever. He knows that song as close as can you can get to the person who wrote it. He knows how that song was made.

Saw him in 2006. Best concert I've ever seen in my life, by a long, long way, and I've seen some killer shows. Forget about what an insane musician, song writer and producer he was. He was a CONSUMATE entertainer. He had the whole audience eating out of the palm of his hand the entire show.

Yea maybe, but then again how many hundreds of covers of their song has been done..? Many many famous bands have covered their songs, so I’m guessing there’s only so much they can “Love”, such as Alien Ant Farm covered and released their tribute to MJ’s Smooth Criminal, sounded and played very well just heavier in sound due to type of band and the tempo was slightly increased.... I’m sure MJ would’ve “LOVED” that too.....

The song was actually written by Willie Dixon and recorded originally by Muddy Waters under the title 'You Need Love'. Willie Dixon sued Led Zeppelin for claiming credit for his song, and he won. Check out Muddy Waters' version by searching youtube for 'you need love muddy waters'. Incidentally, all of the above applies to 'Killing Floor' which is also from LZ's second album and also was written by Willie Dixon (but originally recorded by Howlin' Wolf).

Not just Prince, but the whole band here totally get the original version. They understand and respect the whole song. This is Prince’s personal take on a timeless classic he obviously loved when he heard it as a kid. He knows he more than does it justice. Prince is all about feeling the music and doing what comes naturally within the song, backed up by a shed load of vocal and guitar technique, with equal swagger and technically better than either Page or Plant. Led zep fans (and I’m one) who think prince has trashed “their” beloved song, are quite possibly a bit deaf if not either just ignorant or perhaps just threatened by Prince’s sheer awesome musicality. Listen to it. If you know music, and if you know prejudice, you will understand what is going on here. Prince was incapable of trashing a song. Did Jeff Buckley trash Leonard Cohen’s song? No. He interpreted it his own way.

The fact that he's self taught is beyond the believable. In an interview he encouraged people to pick up a guitar and stick with it because it's a hard instrument to learn and needs constant practice. But he makes it do whatever the hell he wants. Playing notes and chords no one has ever heard before.

Learning guitar is like trying to scale several mountains one higher than the other. The learning curve is steep in the beginning but once you reach one peak, you tend to become comfortable with what you learned, but sooner or later you run into limitations, then you have to scale the next peak. I don't think anyone including Prince has scaled all the peaks, but he's conquered more than most.

Prince did what a lot of great guitar players wouldn't do or for whatever reason couldn't do. He stepped outside of his comfort zone. He would play all genres of music. Nine times out of 10 whatever he covered. He would make it his own. He would kill it. Made you think about the possibilities. Fan or not this man was on another level.

How did Prince find the time to be so good at so many things, including being under-rated!?
He could shred the axe like that, but also drum, play keyboard, even violin, dance in a way that threatened Michael Jackson, sing in at least three different voices, and write top class songs. And all with so much style, class and dramatic flare.
