Born and raised in Minneapolis, Prince signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at the age of 19, soon releasing the albums For You (1978) and Prince (1979). He went on to achieve critical success with the influential albums Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982). His sixth album, Purple Rain (1984), was recorded with his new backing band the Revolution, and was also the soundtrack to the film of the same name in which he starred. Purple Rain garnered continued success for Prince and was a major commercial achievement, spending six consecutive months atop the Billboard 200 chart. The soundtrack also won Prince the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. After disbanding the Revolution, Prince released the album Sign o' the Times (1987), widely hailed by critics as the greatest work of his career. In the midst of a contractual dispute with Warner Bros. in 1993, he changed his stage name to the unpronounceable symbol logo. Hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar (known to fans as the "Love Symbol") and was often referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (or TAFKAP) or simply The Artist.
After signing with Arista Records in 1998, Prince reverted to his original name in 2000. Over the next decade, six of his albums entered the U.S. top 10 charts. In April 2016, at the age of 57, Prince died after accidentally overdosing on fentanyl at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. He was a prolific musician who released 39 albums during his life, with a vast array of unreleased material left in a custom-built bank vault underneath his home after his death, including fully completed albums and over 50 finished music videos. He also released songs under multiple pseudonyms during his life, as well as writing songs that were made popular after being covered by other musicians, most notably "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinéad O'Connor and "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. Estimates of the complete number of songs written by Prince range anywhere from 500 to well over 1,000. Released posthumously, his demo albums Piano and a Microphone 1983 (2018) and Originals (2019) both received critical acclaim.
Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, ranking him among the best-selling music artists of all time. His awards included the Grammy President's Merit Award, the American Music Awards for Achievement and of Merit, the Billboard Icon Award, an Academy Award, and a Golden Globe Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted twice into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.

Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad
Prince Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That you really don't give a damn
They say you really put me down
When I'm doing the best I can
I gave you all of my love
I even gave you my body
Tell me, baby, ain't that enough?
What more do you want me to do?
But I cry when we're apart, yeah
I couldn't do you no better
Don't break what left of my broken heart, baby
Why you want to treat me so bad
When you know I love you?
How can you do this to me
When you know I care?
Why you want to treat me so bad
When you know I love you?
You know, I try so hard
To keep you satisfied
Sometimes you play the part
Sometimes you're so full of pride
And if it's still good to ya
Why you want to treat me so bad?
You used to love it when I'd do you
You used to say I was the best you'd ever had
I play the fool when we're together
I give you everything I can, yeah
And if it's still good to ya
There's something that I can't understand
Why you want to treat me so bad
When you know I love you?
How can you do this to me
When you know I care?
Why you want to treat me so bad
When you know I love you?
The lyrics of Prince's "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" are about a man who loves a woman who doesn't seem to love him in return. He has given her all of his love and caught up in his feelings, he tells her that he plays the fool when they're together and cries when they're apart. He knows that the woman he loves doesn't appreciate him and that she puts him down when he's doing his best. He wants to know what more he can do to make her love him and why she treats him so poorly when he loves her so much.
The lyrics further reveal that the man has done everything in his power to keep his lover satisfied, but she still mistreats him. He acknowledges that sometimes she's full of pride and plays the part, which hurts him. However, he can't understand why the woman wants to treat him so bad when she knows he loves her. He is confused and lost in love, but remains hopeful that the woman will see his worth and treat him with the love and respect he deserves.
Overall, "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" is a poignant and emotional song that expresses the heartache of loving someone who doesn't love back. Prince's passionate delivery adds to the intensity of the lyrics, making it a powerful and memorable track.

There's some talk going 'round town
Rumors are circulating about your lack of care
That you really don't give a damn
It's being said that you don't care at all
They say you really put me down
Word has it that you belittle me often
When I'm doing the best I can
Even though I'm giving my all
I gave you all of my love
I showered you with my affections
I even gave you my body
I shared my physical self with you
Tell me, baby, ain't that enough?
Isn't that sufficient, my dear?
What more do you want me to do?
What else can I do to please you?
I play the fool when we're together
I act foolishly in your presence
But I cry when we're apart, yeah
I weep when we're not together
I couldn't do you no better
I couldn't have treated you any better
Don't break what left of my broken heart, baby
Please don't shatter what remains of my fragile heart, my love
Why you want to treat me so bad
What's the reason for your poor treatment of me?
When you know I love you?
Despite knowing my feelings for you
How can you do this to me
How can you inflict this upon me?
When you know I care?
You are aware of my concern, aren't you?
You know, I try so hard
I put in a significant effort
To keep you satisfied
To ensure your contentment
Sometimes you play the part
Occasionally, you fulfill your role
Sometimes you're so full of pride
At times, you're excessively haughty
And if it's still good to ya
If you're still enjoying it
Why you want to treat me so bad?
Why are you treating me so poorly?
You used to love it when I'd do you
You always appreciated my actions for you
You used to say I was the best you'd ever had
You once praised me as the ultimate lover
I play the fool when we're together
I act foolishly in your presence
I give you everything I can, yeah
I provide everything within my capacity
And if it's still good to ya
If you're still pleased and satisfied
There's something that I can't understand
There is something that I cannot comprehend
Why you want to treat me so bad?
Why are you mistreating me?
When you know I love you?
Despite knowing my love for you
