Witness
Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am a witness for the prosecution of a hate in this love affair
I who am guilty of nothin' but always wantin' you to be there
Mama, I swear I love you, I always have
In school I once traded chairs
If I couldn't feel you
I wanted what was yours
Now I just want you to care
I am a witness (witness)

I'm a witness (witness for the prosecution)
For the prosecution of a hate in this love affair
Whatever it is, you think that I did
You're wrong, I wouldn't even dare
'Cause you know I am a witness
For the prosecution in this love affair (witness for the prosecution)
Don't you know I, I am a witness, witness (witness for the prosecution)

(Witness for the prosecution)
(Witness for the prosecution)
I am a witness for the prosecution of a hate in this love affair, yeah
I who am guilty of nothin' but always wantin' you to be there, be there
Oh, I swear, by heaven I love you
I always have
In school I once traded chairs
If I couldn't be near you
I wanted what was yours
Now I just want you to care

I am a witness for the prosecution of a hate in this love affair, yeah
(Witness for the prosecution) yes, I am
Let me tell you whatever it is, you think that I did
You're wrong, I wouldn't even dare
(Witness for the prosecution)

(Witness for the prosecution)
(Witness for the prosecution)
(Witness)
(Witness)
(Witness)
(Witness)
(Witness, ooh witness)
(Witness for the prosecution in this love affair)

(Witness)
(Witness)
(Witness for the prosecution)

(Witness for the prosecution)
Guilt, seven years hard labor, take him away

Overall Meaning

The song "Witness" by Prince depicts the story of a person who is a witness for the prosecution in a fictional love affair case. The singer begins the song by proclaiming that they are a witness for the prosecution of a "hate" in this love affair. They then assure their mother that although they may be guilty of wanting the person they love to be near them, they have done nothing wrong. They claim that they love the person and have always loved them. The singer further states that they are a witness for the prosecution in this love affair, and despite what the other person may think, they have "done nothing" that is wrong.

The lyrics then repeat that the singer is a witness for the prosecution in this love affair. They repeat that whatever the other person believes they may have done, they are wrong, and that the singer would never dare to do any of the things they are being accused of. The song ends with the repeated chorus of "witness for the prosecution," emphasizing that the singer is standing up for what they believe to be right.

“As someone who believes in God, I'd say the only way currently known to me to prove God's existence is proving the Bible's accuracy, then proving my interpretation of the Bible is correct, which would then prove that God exists.”
How exactly could somebody ever show that their interpretation is the correct one? And also how could somebody prove the accuracy regarding extraordinary claims, like the claimed miracles of Jesus?

”I have yet to do those things to a full, documented and complete extent, or else, I wouldn't have much trouble convincing people of his existence. Whether I achieve this or not once I've finished researching will determine whether I will continue to believe or not.”
You kind of admitted here, that you do not have evidence for your faith. So why do you believe it in the first place. The time to accept this believe is after you find evidence for it and not before.

” So, it is quite frustrating seeing other people who share my faiths, giving completely reasonless and emotionful arguments for God's existence, when there is a clear method for proving God's existence.”
But until now nobody was able to use that method to show good evidence for the existence of a God or Gods. That only leaves emotional and testimonial evidence.

” Now, I don't doubt that what he said was true, but evidence of some sort for his claims is essential for convincing a non believer such as yourself.”
Why do you do not daubt these things when there is no evidence for them? I was a believer but I found out that I have no basis for my beliefs so I got rid of them. What is claimed without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

@FullMetal Atheist Faith in oneself is belief. It’s not for everyone and I’m not going to try and convince you scripturally.
But look at our planet, it stands alone and wonderfully unique. Just the right distance from the sun. Rotation at just the right speed. The moon keeping the earth at a steady tilt and giving consistent seasons. Amazing creatures and plants that is the circle of life. Then there’s mankind, unique to all life. The way the Brain works which is the biggest mystery in the entire universe.
If you think about these things, everything mentioned is a miracle. Even scientists cannot rule out a creator as its mathematically perfect in a none mathematical perfect universe.
Then there’s the bible. 66 small books. Starting Over 3500 years ago it was written then over a period of 1600 years 40 different writers from different times, different lives wrote the rest of the bible.
The bible also touches on Scientific facts, prophecy’s and unequal distribution.
Scientific- when it was written many people had mistaken ideas of the shape of the earth. But the writers wrote that it was a sphere (200 years later protagoras concluded it was a sphere) and that it was suspended on nothing (3000 years later Isaac Newton seemed the earth hanged on nothing).
In 732BCE one writer foretold Babylon would be destroyed, the name of the of the leader and how. History confirms every detail was accurate in 539BCE.
Concerning the same city in 614BCE it was foretold the city would be destroyed and never inhabited. That’s also proven true and the ruins can be seen today in Iraq.
Throughout history powerful rulers have tried to destroy The bible, those who translated it and read it. It’s sustained greatest attack of any book but has been widely translated and distributed book of all time in over 2700 languages. It’s scientifically accurate, contains reliable prophecy and available to all mankind. There is more reason to believe that it is inspired by God, Jehovah.

Prince intelligent, humble and a man who recognized his spiritual needs found Jehovah and the purpose of his life ... and died struggling with his imperfection trying to be loyal!! Hope to see him in paradise and forget all about this evil world !!! Thanks for this video .. it doesnt matter the piano what matters is how this man sought the truth with humility not leaning on his own thoughts but on those of Jehovah and the reason why Jesus died for us and as Paul the Apostle, he thought the same (Philippians 3:8-11)8  Why,
for that matter, I do indeed also consider all things to be loss on
account of the excelling value of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.+ On account of him I have taken the loss of all things and I consider them as a lot of refuse,+ that I may gain Christ

9  and be found in union with him, having, not my own righteousness, which results from law,+ but that which is through faith+ in Christ, the righteousness that issues from God on the basis of faith,+

10  so as to know him and the power of his resurrection+ and a sharing in his sufferings,+ submitting myself to a death like his,+

11  [to see] if I may by any means attain to the earlier resurrection*+ from the dead.

I was raised a Jehovah's Witness, and although I'm not a practicing member, these are my beleifs! Prince is my all time favorite preforner and I have been in love with him since 1984 and the the movie Purple Rain. I just fell a little bit more in love with him now that I know I will see him one day in paradise on Earth as Jehovah meant us to live!!!!!!!

You need to come back to Jehovah, and then welcome back all who have served him.

@Monique Delaney W każdym wiernym przekładzie Biblii, winno być imię osobiste Boga ponad 7 tys. razy. Np. Ps. 83:18, Wyjścia 3:15, Izajasza 42:8. W nowym testamencie jest ponad 200 cytatów z pism hebrajskich i winno tam być Jego imię, np. Rzymian 10:13, Objawienie 4:8/Izajasza 6:3/.📖🌞

@Monique Delaney King James took Jehovah's name out of the Bible and used LORD instead. Some older King James Bible's left it in at Psalms 83:18 "May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth." The New World translation of the Holy Scriptures restored Jehovah's name where it belongs throughout the Bible.
