American Woman
Prince & Lenny Kravitz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come hanging around my door
I don't want to see your face no more

I got more important things to do
Than spend my time growin' old with you
Now woman, stay away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be
Don't come knocking around my door
I don't want to see your shadow no more

Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes
Now woman, get away
American woman, listen what I say

American woman, I said get way
American woman, listen what I say
Don't come hanging around my door
Don't want to see your face no more

I don't need your war machines
I don't need your ghetto scenes
Colored lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else's eyes

Now woman, get away
American woman, listen what I say
American woman, stay away from me
American woman, mama let me be

I gotta go
I gotta get away
Babe, I gotta go
I want to fly away

I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman
I'm gonna leave you woman

Bye bye, bye bye
Bye bye, bye bye
American woman
You're no good for me

And I'm no good for you
(American woman) I'm looking right straight in the eye
I'll tell you what I'm gonna do
(American woman) I'm gonna leave you woman

You know I gotta go (American woman)
I'm gonna leave you woman
I gotta go
(American woman) I gotta go

I gotta go

American woman
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Prince and Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman" song are about rejecting traditional American values and the societal pressures that come along with them. The song is a commentary on the stereotype of the "all-American" woman that is presented in mass media, and how the singer, who desires freedom and independence, is not interested in being with such a woman. The chorus, where the singer repetitively urges the American woman to stay away and let him be, not only shows his disinterest in conforming to societal norms but also his willingness to break free from the standards that he feels are holding him down. He invokes the use of colored lights that could easily mesmerize someone to distract himself from the "all-American" woman and stay true to his desire for independence.

Throughout the song, there is an underlying theme of war and the negative effects it has on society. The lyrics "I don't need your war machines, I don't need your ghetto scenes" perhaps indicate the rejection of the negative aspects of patriotism and the notion of blindly supporting war. Overall, the song seems to be a rejection of the traditional American way of life and celebrates individuality, freedom and the willingness to break away from societal conventions.

Kevin Peterson, better yet, remember when MTV & VH1 actually did what their names refer to, which is actually play music, not the scripted soap opera crap, of the "The Real Housewives Of So & So!"!? Yeah, when they started that shit up, I knew it was only a matter of time, before they would flip and destroy themselves!
