Prince & The Revolution Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was dreamin' when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray
But when I woke up this mornin'
Could've sworn it was judgment day

The sky was all purple
There were people runnin' everywhere
Tryin' to run from the destruction
You know I didn't even care

'Cause they say two thousand zero zero
Party over, oops out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999

I was dreamin' when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party
And parties weren't meant to last

War is all around us
My mind says prepare to fight
So if I gotta die
I'm gonna listen to my body tonight

Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero
Party over, oops out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999
Yeah, yeah

Lemme tell ya somethin'
If you didn't come to party
Don't bother knockin' on my door
I got a lion in my pocket
And baby he's ready to roar, yeah yeah

Everybody's got a bomb
We could all die here today, uhh
But before I'll let that happen
I'll dance my life away, oh

They say two thousand zero zero
Party over, oops out of time
We're runnin' outta time
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999)

Say it one more time
Two thousand zero zero
Party over, oops out of time
Yeah, yeah
So tonight we gonna, we gonna (tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999)

1999 (1999)
Don't ya want to go (1999)
Don't ya want to go (1999)
We could all die here today (1999)

I don't want to die
I'd rather dance my life away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Prince & The Revolution's song 1999 suggest a feeling of uncertainty and impending doom, but also a desire to live life to the fullest regardless of what may come. The opening lines indicate a dreamlike quality to the lyrics and potential deviation from typical songwriting conventions. The reference to judgment day and purple skies suggest a cataclysmic event that people are trying to flee from, but the singer says he doesn't care. The iconic line "they say two thousand zero zero, party over, oops out of time" implies that the turn of the millennium may herald the end of the world as we know it, but rather than live in fear or panic, Prince declares he will party as if it's 1999, which represents a time of youthful exuberance, freedom, and hedonism.

Prince mentions the ongoing war and the need to prepare to fight, which could be interpreted as a call to arms or a metaphor for the struggles one faces in life. He then claims that he will listen to his body and enjoy the moment, insinuating that the fleetingness of life is all the more reason to celebrate it. The final chorus returns to the idea that everyone has a bomb, and the danger of death is ever-present, but rather than let that stop him, Prince declares his intention to dance his life away.

In our opinion the most talented musician of our time. Prince was a true genius - someone who could write all of his own music, play every instrument, produce the albums and still tour yearly and release albums, with hundreds if not thousands of songs fully produced supposedly still unheard by the public found in his vault. And above it all a truly amazing performer. O+>

@AC in what aspect are they better singers besides ur own personal opinion? Stop saying subjective statements as if they are a fact prince is easily a top vocalist and top 10 on many people's lists. And who cares about a stupid music video? Prince had great music videos, he was a great dancer, singer, instrumentalist, composer, song writer, producer, live performer like no other he blows mike out of the water when it comes to overall musicianship.
