Shine On Brightly
Procol Harum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My Prussian-blue electric clock's
Alarm bell rings, it will not stop
And I can see no end in sight
And search in vain by candlelight
For some long road that goes nowhere
For some signpost that is not there
And even my befuddled brain
Is shining brightly, quite insane

The chandelier is in full swing
As gifts for me the three kings bring
Of myrrh and frankincense, I'm told,
And fat old Buddhas carved in gold
And though it seems they smile with glee
I know in truth they envy me
And watch as my befuddled brain
Shines on brightly quite insane

Above all else confusion reigns
And though I ask no-one explains
My eunuch friend has been and gone
He said that I must soldier on
And though the Ferris wheel spins round
My tongue it seems has run aground

And croaks as my befuddled brain
Shines on brightly, quite insane

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Procol Harum's song "Shine On Brightly" are a reflection of a mind in turmoil. The song begins with the description of an electric clock's alarm bell ringing incessantly without any relief in sight. The singer of the song searches for a long road that leads nowhere and looks for a signpost that is not there. The candlelight adds to a sense of confusion and chaos that permeates throughout the song. The singer's brain is described as befuddled and shining brightly, which is an indication of its insane state.

The second stanza of the song introduces the Three Kings who bring gifts to the singer. However, despite the veneer of joy, the Kings envy the singer. This envy is symbolic of the singer's unique state of mind, which they cannot comprehend. Confusion reigns in the lyrics, and no explanation is given, despite the singer's repeated pleas for it. The eunuch friend advises the singer to soldier on, but the Ferris wheel seems to spin relentlessly, leaving the singer tongue-tied, and unable to articulate what they want to say.

AMAZINGLY under-appreciated group. Known for the classic "Whiter Shade of Pale", but so many more wonderful songs, including this one. Very tight band.

@billheineman472

Hardly "underappreciated" wicked air-play with every new Lp release...
I rarely missed a concert since '71... they always played to good crowds.
I missed 2 earlier tours (Chicago) as I didn't have a regular income
before '71 or my own transportation.

Dear Gary shine brightly in the Sky and sing for the stars forever and ever

@Glicksman1

One of the great recordings from one of the great bands. So underrated, even in the day and certainly since.

@tailgunner6948

Incredible band...today we lost Gary Brooker....RIP my hero...

@prjacobs1

Just to date myself:) I saw Procol Harum play the entire Shine On Brightly @ the Fillmore East in 1968, just after the record had been released. They came on stage in the dark and opened with this song!

@rsomekh1953

I was there too!!

@brucephoenix3989
