Whisky Train
Procol Harum Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ain't gonna ride that whisky train
Ain't gonna burn up no more flame
Throw away my bottle down the drain
Ain't gonna ride that whisky train

To think that I could be so wrong
To be so sick and still go on
The way I drink it's been too long
Don't see much point in carrying on

I'm gonna lose these drinking blues
I'm gonna find a girl to make me choose
Between lovin' her and drinking booze
I'm gonna lose these drinking blues

Ain't gonna ride that whisky train
I'm tired of burning in the flame

Throw away my bottle down the drain
Ain't gonna ride that whisky train

I'm a guitar player, but lets give some love to BJ Wilson, the drummer...great groove behind Robin

Keith Donnelly

Absolutely!

Bill Knudson

Amen to that! A truly underrated musician.

I know people love that stupid cowbell skit but the cowbell playing on this is almost as great as Robin Trower ( Almost) in my opinion😍

math-u-j

Love how he builds up on the snare, then crash!

Fuck yeah I'm a guitarist too, and while Robin Trower is laying down some badass shit, if you put some average boring drummer behind that it would definitely take away some of the badass-ness

Since nobody has mentioned it,allow me to be the 1st to give credit to the terrific job the bassist does on this tune.Bassists are so often the unsung heroes of blues and or rock(especially rock it seems).Sorry I don't no the man's name. But what a rhythm section he and BJ made!

Karl Fisher

I think his name was Cartwright, maybe David. Check the credits on Broken Barricades! K

Procol Harum always had a nasty primal blues side. On one hand you had the classical, Bach, Wagnerian side with lyrics that evoke Milton's "Paradise Lost", Poe and Dante's "Inferno", on the other you had the gut bucket, Robert Johnson, met the Devil at the crossroads side. These two aspects blended perfectly - the music and lyrics depict a struggle of the soul, temptation, the fall, and redemption. You've got tracks like "In Held Twas' I" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale", and also ones like "The Devil Came From Kansas", "Juicy John Pink" and "Whisky Train" - but there are many tracks that have an equal blend of these two elements (the lost pilgrim confronting the Beast), such as "The Gates of Cerdes" and "Repent Walpurgis", etc. Procol Harum's roots ran deep, whether it be the gothic or Delta blues. Robin Trower made a perfect Beast. Great and unique band.

Ny Paddy

One of the greatest guitar riffs ever.
