I once wrote this in a poem:

I believe in paradox:
I believe free will
Rides valiant on the mighty steed
Of space-time's rolling mill.

In the absence of belief in the supernatural, a knowledge of physics inevitably leads to the acceptance of 'hard' determinism. However, I always strive to remember these two things:
(1) Even if free will is an illusion, it's one that seems to work much of the time, so relax.
(2) If Many Worlds Interpretation (of quantum mechanics) is true, then it's possible to have both free will AND determinism: every decision you make plays out in all possible outcomes, but you only get to experience one of them, so in a sense you've 'made a choice' without violating the laws of physics. I admit this is a very unscientific hypothesis, but it's one I like to hold because it gives me some comfort :)

Out of all these videos, this one Desperately needs a part two. Using an outside view of this question and of Defeatism Vs. Aspiration need to be expanded on even deeper, as I feel the implication that you can and should swap between these two equally useful viewpoints as needed is extremely useful in Mental Therapy and life in general. The concept of being able to let go of the overall question of being right or wrong, and actually using philosophical concepts to fit the situation should be taught everywhere. That's main one goal of philosophy, not to be right and prove others wrong, but to be able to make the best possible choices in life based on your readily available evidence. Because sometimes you'll be happier going your own way like a dog exploring the woods, or you'll be happy being pulled towards something you desire, like a dog to the food bowl.

Lengthy Post Warning:

I think a good place to start and help grasp the deeper concepts here would be to continue the dog and leash analogy and go further into the mental concept of the leash itself.

To create a base point, let's say you're a comatose vegetable with no brain activity. Obviously, you have no control or mind to do so, so the analogy would be that your leash length is zero and tied directly to the cart. From that starting zero, what determines the length of the leash? One such measure could be wealth, thereby allowing you to buy anything and be anywhere. Or would it be simply willpower? (where does that willpower originate? Fame? Social Power? Just an over-inflated ego?) But, this leash also comes with the problems of maintaining that length/wealth/willpower, which will make you beholden to other individuals (Chairmen & Investors, Customers, Family, etc) who deal with your income, life, and outcome of your actions. So is this leash really as long as it appears or do more social contracts shorten it?

Further, if you are held responsible by more people, the analogy could go on to say you have not just one, but many different leashes, each pulling on you at different tensions. So, do we have any actual control of the length of the leash AND the number of leashes around our necks? Sure, you can sever ties with people, gain some extra length by working on financial goals. But some leashes appear unbreakable or stagnant, like trying to run faster than a tiger or trying in vain to make a wealthy/upper class individual favor you over their own kin.

I could go on, but in Summation: What determines the length of the lease? How many leashes are there? And, is it possible to alter any of these leashes at all? Sometimes, we all need a little direction/defeatism and a little freedom/aspiration, and the amounts could change even daily.

@Jake Foster This is the thing, we have limted free will. Right. Rest energy and our time gets consumed by our habitual thought patterns. Now to create new habits, people often tune into self help books. Since we can learn more from other expereince and it help us to understand things and to change the course of our life.
As to learn something, we have to go through a journey. Then, once we learned a thing. And practice alot. Then we will not forget it. It will become the part of our life for instance, reading skill, writing skill, or video editing skill.

Similarly, the extent of free will get inhanced, when we invest our life into understanding and exploring life. There are many ways, such as yoga, mediation, studying and analysing things. If you could able to devote yourself to this process. The whole life would become open to you. Do whatever you want. Then it would be like, as Shakespere wrote.
All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances.

As the investment increase, during the journey, may be so painful to you. But as the learning is painful, one should keep going. In the end, it reward you in so many ways, that your investment would seem nothing as compare to possibilites.
For this reason, Einstein said:
Imagination is greater than knowledge.

I am extremely confused about broader implications of fully embracing deterministic ideas.

I wonder, is there any motivation for improvement in a deterministic philosophical stance? Since I cannot choose to stick to my diet, I can really just witness if my illusory 'self' is strong enough to resist a temptation prompted by unconscious systems (perhaps activity of: hypothalamus, hormones produced to a cue of a juicy cheesburger, memory traces, blood sugar levels etc.)

When "I" successfully go through with my diet, "I" cannot take credit for that as every time "I" have struggled with many different options such as: - eating a donut or nor eating it, - bravely resisting tempations in spite of a hunger, - switching to a completely different diet, - denying futility of sticking to a diet, - believing that a given diet will bring positive changes to my life,

... all these and many more, potential options, actions, and mental states, are nothing but information entering my field of consciousness. "My" decision to continue with a diet in spite of difficulties is also an inevitable consequence of previous mental states that "I" do not control.

Therefore, virtues of temperance, willpower, etc. are nothing more but labels that we stick onto individuals fortunate enough to have neuroarchitecture and life experience that yield their exemplary actions.

With this knowledge, how then can you sustain your motivation, knowing that nothing you ever did (or will do), was a result of your independent choice? Hey, since my failure of an exam was inevitable, as will be my decision to repeat it, or dropping from university, or joining military ,or committing suicide, etc. etc...

Start with the basis before getting into the most illusionary thing about life.
Have you decided to be born in the first place ? What about the way you look ? The education you were given ? The social status you were brought into ? Your ethnics ? Your culture ? Your language ? Make sure you answer these questions before drawing any conclusion about your emotions….

Everything was predetermined, inside and from the very first human being. We can track you and your family roots, and can go back to the past from where you originate, even before the first man was created and the breath of life was put into him, there, you where thought of and predetermined to be born into this world one day. You dont need to believe in this, it is just plain fact, it has nothing to do with belief.

What Yeshua, whom we call Jesus, the Christ, said, is that « before Abraham was, i am ». He not only spoke for himself but explained how things and people were made, that is that before Adam was, you were, and so was i, and everybody else you see, they were in Adam.
Yeshua didnt say Adam, because the jews elevated Abraham above all previous men, including Noah and other prophets.

Science proves everything is predetermined, and so does science prove God is the truth.

Nobody said it is easy to receive the truth, the fact that you never choose anything, from the day you were born to the day of your death, or even i, two years later, writing this message to you at this very exact moment. This reaction i am having, why particularly you and not another comment ?all i can tell you is that everything is God’s will, and God’s will only, otherwise there would be nothing, because we all know none of us is doing anything after all, that we dont own any energy from ourselves. You know damn well you do not choose to breathe for yourself, the ideas you have, the dreams you dream, all of these are given by a higher force and power, it is God.

@goaliedude32 yeah that's basically what I wrote in the comment above, most of our life, who we are, who we will be in the future, things that happen or will happen to us are all out of our control meaning that free will is almost inexistent and i say "almost" inexistent because even though we don't accept it there are some aspect of our life we can control, small things that can sometimes lead to big changes, so if free will exist, it exist but in a really small aspect of our life, the rest is up to other people decisions, universe or luck, things like being rejected from a Job, you wanted to get that job so bad and did everything you could to get that job that could change your life but other people decides not to give you the job so this is one of multiple ways we only have control in really small aspect of our life.

There are lots of people starting busyness and doing lots of things to become rich, some of them will be rich others won't, while some people are born in millionare households and have to do nothing in life to get money just ask for it.

Probably there's an athlete training averyday to become one of the best in the sport he plays, but suddenly he gets sick or run over by a vehicle, things he couldn't control.

So i say 50% of our life results are decisions we make, the other 50% is up to other people desicions, the universe as they say or luck, things that just happens and are out of everyone control

"We may be powerless to alter certain events, but we will always be free to choose our attitude towards them." That is if our attitude hasn't already been predetermined.

Lifa Dysi

@Sam Random Guy I would've replied with more, but I honestly don't really want to get into this. Things are either predetermined or not.

Lifa Dysi

@Sam Random Guy "That is if our attitude hasn't already been predetermined". I never stated predetermined for certain, but it is a possibility.

Sam Random Guy

Hold on, assuming the logic of your statement. Does it mean that we are never responsible for the things we commit and the decisions we choose? Say for example, if a person commits murder, he can reason, "I'm not responsible, for I was predetermined to commit murder". You see, if we assume that one has no free will, various problems can arise.

According to Hinduism all is predetermined. Sometimes I wonder what is the point?

The universe is either predetermined by some laws and you cannot do anything but follow them or its decided by randomness at a level we cannot measure and our actions will have unintended consequences, either way I'll eat this whole bucket of ice cream
