After signing a contract with the Atlantic Records label Lava Records in 1994, his first major-label album, Honor Among Thieves, was issued in 1995. His second album, Misguided Roses, spawned I'll Be, a major single in 1998. Two more albums (Messenger and Far from Over) followed, but at the end of 2001, he split from Lava. In 2003 he released a collection of acoustic versions of songs both old and new called The Austin Sessions via ATC Records, a Nashville-based independent record label (at which McCain was the first artist signed following its creation in 2001). Mid-2004 saw the arrival of his first studio album in three years, entitled Scream & Whisper, which was released on another indie label, DRT Entertainment.
He has released two DVDs to date. The first was through ATC records in late 2002, called Mile Marker: Songs and Stories from the Acoustic Highway, and it consisted of interviews, live performances, and other material. The other was in late 2004, Tinsel & Tap Shoes. It was his first live concert DVD, recorded at The House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A new CD was released in April, 2006 titled, Lost in America. Edwin recently signed a contract with Vanguard Records. This album (#8) is said to be a true "rock 'n roll" collection.

What Matters
Edwin McCain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You keep your dreams locked down inside
Choking on a lifetime of never take a chance
Don't wake up one day wishing you tried
It ain't about the money, it ain't about the time
It ain't about the love you lost or the things you think you left behind
It ain't about the losing streak, makes you feel like you're falling apart
Let's forget about the notion that we're not the same
My blood runs as red as yours
We all get angry, we've all been scared
We've all made big mistakes that can never be repaired
It ain't about the money, it ain't about the time
It ain't about the love you lost or the things you think you left behind
It ain't about the losing streak, makes you feel like you're falling apart
What matters is your heart
Look me in the eye and take my hand
We can make a difference
We can make a difference I know we can
Have you given up on passion living day to day
You keep your dreams locked down inside
Choking on a lifetime of never take a chance
Don't wake up one day wishing you tried
It ain't about the money, it ain't about the time
It ain't about the love you lost or the things you think you left behind
It ain't about the losing streak, makes you feel like you're falling apart
What matters is your heart
The song "What Matters" by Edwin McCain talks about the importance of passion, taking chances, and listening to your heart. It urges the listener not to give up on their dreams or settle for a mundane, day-to-day existence. The lyrics suggest that we all make mistakes and face challenges in life, but what truly matters is having the courage to pursue what we truly believe in and the willingness to make a difference in the world.
The chorus of the song emphasizes that materialistic possessions and past failures do not define a person's worth or success. True success comes from following your heart and being true to yourself. The song calls on listeners to take action by reminding us that together, we can make a difference and create a better world.
Overall, "What Matters" is an inspirational song that highlights the importance of following our dreams, taking chances, and being true to ourselves despite the challenges we may face along the way.
