Puck Dannin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Water's gonna overflow
Swamp's gonna rise
No boat's gonna row
Now, you can train on down
To Williams Point
You can bust your feet
You can rock this joint
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.
Now, don't you try an' move me
You're just gonna lose
There's a crash on the levee
And mama, you've been refused
Well, it's sugar for sugar
And salt for salt
If you go down in the flood
It's gonna be your own fault
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.
Well, that high tide's risin'
Mama, don't you let me down
Pack up your suitcase
Mama, don't you make a sound
Now, it's king for king
Queen for queen
It's gonna be the meanest flood
That anybody's seen
Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now?
You're gonna have to find yourself
Another best friend, somehow.
The lyrics of Puck Dannin's "1999" are a forewarning to a friend to prepare for an imminent natural disaster. The songwriter paints a picture of a levee that is about to break and a flood that is about to occur. The swamp is going to rise, and the water is going to overflow, leaving no boats to row. The only option is to train down to Williams Point or to rock this joint - but the friend has to be ready to move fast. In such situations, one finds out who their true friends are. The songwriter suggests that the friend is going to need to find herself another best friend, somehow, implying that the current friend is not reliable or supportive in times of crisis.
The second verse of the song gets more straightforward and straightforward, as the singer tells the friend not to try and change her mind or persuade her in any way, as her mind is made up, and she has already refused to move with her best friend. The disaster is going to strike just as the friend refused to leave, and she may face dire consequences. The songwriter highlights that the choices we make today, determine the outcome of our future, and therefore the friend should be responsible for her decisions. The chorus reiterates the need for the friend to find a new best friend to lean on in times of crisis.
