Pearls
Puer Kim Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The thing that I can't quite remember
But never forget get get
The thing that you can never live with
But you can't let go go go
The biggest shell in the history
Was still tiny for those pearls
They couldn't help themselves but break and leave
It wasn't about the timing
It is firmer than the passion
It wasn't about the nature
That comfort is larger than most
It wasn't about the present
It is all about epiphany
We are all dying
They thank god death is next
The one that you don't quite believe
But you would never pay pay pay
The one that you don't ever tell a lie
But you don't speak speak speak
The tiniest pearl in the history
Was still huge for these shells
She couldn't help herself but break and leave
It wasn't about the timing
It is firmer than the passion
It wasn't about the nature
That comfort is larger than most
It wasn't about the present
It is all about epiphany
We are all dying
They thank god death is soon
It wasn't about the timing
It is firmer than the passion
It wasn't about the nature
That comfort is larger than most
It wasn't about the present
It is all about epiphany

We are all dying
They thank god death is here

Overall Meaning

The song "Pearls" is a melancholic and introspective piece that invites listeners to reflect on the ephemeral nature of life and the value of what truly matters in the grand scheme of things. The lyrics take the form of a contemplative inner monologue in which the singer ponders about the meaning of life, death, love, and loss. The "pearls" in the song are a metaphor for the things in life that are rare, precious, and fragile, but still worth striving for, even though they might ultimately break and disappear.

The lines "The thing that I can't quite remember / But never forget get get" suggest that there are some experiences or emotions that are hard to put into words or memories, but that leave a deep and lasting impression in our hearts. The chorus repeats the refrain "It wasn't about the timing / It is firmer than the passion / It wasn't about the nature / That comfort is larger than most / It wasn't about the present / It is all about epiphany / We are all dying / They thank god death is here" which highlights the idea that life is not just about chasing fleeting pleasures, but also about finding meaning, comfort, and epiphanies in the face of mortality.

The song ends on a note of acceptance and gratitude towards death, acknowledging that it is a natural part of life and an opportunity to let go of worldly attachments and embrace the unknown. Overall, "Pearls" is a poignant and thought-provoking song that invites listeners to embrace the beauty and transience of life, and to live each moment with awareness and appreciation.

I don't know how accurate this is, but this song sounds like it's talking about the "sweet relief of death" or suicide. Everything being in black, and the veil she wears occasionally, feels like a death reference. Even the odd scenes, like the dog going to rest, or the pearl (soul?) she takes out from her own mouth, has this similar motif.

The first verse's lines sound like they're talking about that creeping depression that leads toward death, that thing you "can't let go" and "can't forget" gnawing at the back of your mind. I feel like this is what the pen digging into the table represents--all of that burdensome pain wearing the victim's sturdiness down. The fingers crawling along her skin give me the same feelings--it's always there, itching at the victim's psyche.

The second verse is much more specific, and refers to the people involved, with the one you "don't believe but never pay" attention to being the depressed person, who "never speaks."

The chorus goes on the help explain that the choice to take one's own life is instant, like an "epiphany," and isn't planned out with timing but all about the "comfort" it brings the victim in the end.

Does anyone know if she explained this song? I'd like to see what she had in mind when she put this together. Overall, I love this concept.
