Round Here
Punchline Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Step out the front door like a ghost
Into the fog where no one notices
The contrast of white on white.

And in between the moon and you
The angels get a better view
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right.
I walk in the air between the rain,
Through myself and back again.
Where? I don't know
Maria says she's dying.
Through the door, I hear her crying
Why? I don't know

'Round here we always stand up straight
'Round here something radiates

Maria came from Nashville with a suitcase in her hand
She said she'd like to meet a boy who looks like Elvis
And she walks along the edge of where the ocean meets the land
Just like she's walking on a wire in the circus
She parks her car outside of my house, takes her clothes off,
Says she's close to understanding Jesus
She knows she's more that just a little misunderstood
She has trouble acting normal when she's nervous

'Round here we're carving out our names
'Round here we all look the same
'Round here we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
'Round here she's slipping through my hands

Sleeping children got to run like the wind
Out of the lightning dream
Mama's little baby better get herself in
Out of the lightning

She says, "It's only in my head."
She says, "Shh, I know it's only in my head."

But the girl on the car in the parking lot
Says: "Man, you should try to take a shot
Can't you see my walls are crumbling."

Then she looks up at the building
And says she's thinking of jumping.
She says she's tired of life;
She must be tired of something.

'Round here she's always on my mind
'Round here (hey man) I got lots of time
'Round here we're never sent to bed early
And nobody makes us wait
'Round here we stay up very very very very late

I can't see nothing, nothing
Around here
You catch me if I'm falling
You catch me if I'm falling
Will you catch me because I'm falling down on here
I said " I'm under the gun"
'Round here.
Oh man I said "I'm under the gun"
'Round here.

And I can't see nothin', nothin'.
'Round here.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Punchline's "Round Here" paint a picture of a small town where life is a little darker than it seems on the surface. The opening verse sets the tone with its eerie imagery of stepping out into "the fog where no one notices." The contrast of white on white suggests that the town is blanketed in a kind of obscurity, where right and wrong are difficult to differentiate. Maria, the singer's love interest, is introduced with a description of how she walks along the edge of where the ocean meets the land "just like she's walking on a wire in the circus." This hyperbole underscores the idea that life in this town is precarious and unstable, that it could all unravel at any moment. The recurring line "Can't you see my walls are crumbling?" reinforces this theme.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of restlessness and aimlessness. The lyrics suggest that the town's inhabitants are searching for something, but they don't know what it is. The singer himself is perpetually caught between places, "walking in the air between the rain" without any idea of where he's going. Maria's existential crisis ("She says she's tired of life; she must be tired of something") is mirrored in the chorus, where the singer asserts that "I can't see nothing, nothing 'round here." There is a general sense of despair and disillusionment, which is underscored by the repetition of the line "I said 'I'm under the gun,' 'round here."

In this part of town, we tend to carry ourselves with poise and confidence. There's an unspoken energy in the air.

Maria's come from Tennessee to meet someone who shares similar physical traits with Elvis. She walks along the beach as if she's vying for attention under the big top. She's parked her car outside my house and stripped down, claiming her understanding of Jesus is gradually coming together. Though she knows she's not normal, she has difficulty behaving adequately when she's anxious or fearful.

'Round here we're carving out our names 'Round here we all look the same 'Round here we talk just like lions But we sacrifice like lambs 'Round here she's slipping through my hands
Here, we create our signature and leave lasting marks, but we tend to look alike. We speak with assertiveness, yet we have a real risk of losing ourselves in a situation. And specifically in my life, someone important is slipping away from me.

This special person is constantly on my thoughts. I have a lot of time on my hands, and things move at a slow pace, but everything is copacetic. We're never enforced to retire early, thus we remain awake quite late.
