The duo were originally two of several members of the band of GOBBLE GOBBLE (now Born Gold). While on tour with Gobble Gobble, Roddick began experimenting with rnb and hip hop beats. James was asked to sing on a track called "Ungirthed," thus forming Purity Ring. The song was released in January 2011.
On April 3, 2012, Purity Ring announced that they were signed by media company 4AD world-wide and Last Gang Records in Canada. Later in the same month the band announced their debut album, Shrines, set to be released July 24, 2012. They also debuted the first single from the album titled "Obedear." On June 20, 2012, Purity Ring released another single from the album titled "Fineshrine." The album reached number 100 on the UK Albums Chart. In the United States, it reached number thirty-two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Dance/Electronic Albums.

Bid you bring me some strong drink
Strain out the pulps and set them close outside
For when my belly, for when my little belly speaks
Grandma, there's air beneath my bed
And it whispers
And it whispers when I rest
Bid hem the skirts in salt and vinegar, vinegar
Grandma, the water is rising
My boundless hair has gotten green
I'll be your swimming forest island
Bid you walk safely, safely over me
Grandma, my hands have wandered
And my legs, my little legs are getting weak
Bid lend me your wispy frame
And guard my powers, guard my precious powers in its cage
Grandma, I've been unruly
In my dreams and with my speech
Drill little holes into my eyelids
That I might see you, that I might see you when I sleep
Grandma, the water is rising
My boundless hair has gotten green
I'll be your swimming forest island
Bid you walk safely, safely over me
I'll be your swimming forest island
The lyrics of Purity Ring's song "Belispeak" depict a conversation between a grandchild and their grandmother, who appears to have a supernatural or spiritual connection. The grandchild is struggling with strange dreams and physical sensations, asking their grandmother for help and guidance. The line "my sleep is narrow" suggests that the grandchild is having difficulty sleeping or possibly experiencing nightmares. They ask for "strong drink" and for their grandmother to strain out the "pulps," which could refer to metaphorical impurities or literal physical discomfort.
The grandchild also expresses feeling vulnerable and exposed, with "air beneath my bed" that whispers when they rest. The grandmother responds by bidding them to hem their skirts with salt and vinegar, which could suggest a kind of protective warding, and to hover closely under their head. The grandchild speaks of their body changing, with "boundless hair" that has gotten green--a metaphor for feeling wild and overgrown--and "legs... getting weak." They ask their grandmother to lend them her "wispy frame" and to guard their "precious powers in its cage," possibly referring to their dreams and the ideas or emotions they contain.

Grandma, my sleep is narrow
I am having trouble sleeping
Bid you bring me some strong drink
Please get me an alcoholic drink
Strain out the pulps and set them close outside
Filter the drink and leave the pulp outside
For when my belly, for when my little belly speaks
When my stomach is upset, I will drink the filtered drink
Grandma, there's air beneath my bed
There is something under my bed
And it whispers, and it whispers when I rest
It makes noises when I try to sleep
Bid hem the skirts in salt and vinegar, vinegar
Please put my bedskirt in salt and vinegar
And hover closely, oh hover closely under head
Stay near my head, protect me
Grandma, the water is rising
The water is getting high
My boundless hair has gotten green
My hair has changed color
I'll be your swimming forest island
I will be a safe place for you to stay above the water
Bid you walk safely, safely over me
Please walk over me safely
Grandma, my hands have wandered
I have lost control of my hands
And my legs, my little legs are getting weak
My legs are becoming weaker
Bid lend me your wispy frame
Please give me your thin, frail body
And guard my powers, guard my precious powers in its cage
Protect my abilities
Grandma, I've been unruly
I have been misbehaving
In my dreams and with my speech
During my dreams and when I talk
Drill little holes into my eyelids
Make small holes in my eyelids
That I might see you, that I might see you when I sleep
So I can see you in my dreams
