Puscifer's original name was Umlaut, "a premiere improvisational hardcore band". The name "Puscifer" was first publicized as a fictional band in the first episode of Mr. Show, including Keenan and Adam Jones as members. Jones is not associated with Puscifer otherwise, although artwork by Jones has been featured on Puscifer apparel (the "Your Mom's a Bitch" shirt, specifically). Keenan describes Puscifer as "simply a playground for the various voices in my head, [...] a space with no clear or discernible goals, [...] where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes." Keenan also worked on short films with Ford Englerth and Jeffrey Brooks from Red Rock Entertainment Development; these shorts were done in a similar manner to that of Mr. Show and Tom Waits' Big Time.
Puscifer is "as much a clothing line as it is a band", with the clothing items produced in limited numbers. Keenan collaborated on a leather jacket with Paul Frank. On September 16, 2008, Keenan updated the puscifer.com blog, revealing that the first ever Puscifer store would be opening "hopefully" by October 1 in Jerome, Arizona. Occupying a small space above a tattoo parlor, the store opened on October 3, 2008. In addition to the merchandise available on the band's online store, Keenan has also made available locally roasted coffee, art, and an ever-changing list of limited edition collectibles.

Like a bad idea
Peddlin' salvation
Threatenin' damnation
About to drop you like Cain
Like Cain dropped Abel
About to drop you like Cain
You're no medium
Just the scum on the shallow end of assumption
Time to come correct, son
Rapture my ass
You better hope he takes you
Before I do
About to drop you like Cain
Like Cain dropped Abel
About to drop you like Cain
You better hope he takes you
About to drop you like Cain
I've had enough of your voodoo
About to drop you like Cain
You better hope he takes you
Up the Sodom
You're Gomorrah deliverin' redemption
Feel my resurrection
About to drop you like Cain
Like Cain dropped Abel
About to drop you like Cain
You better hope he takes you
About to drop you like Cain
I've had enough of your voodoo
About to drop you like Cain
You better hope he takes you
Before I do
The lyrics of Puscifer's song The Rapture seem to be directed towards an individual or group that is trying to manipulate or deceive others by peddling salvation and threatening damnation. The song's narrator sees through this façade and compares the person/group to the biblical story of Cain and Abel, with the singer suggesting that they are about to "drop" them like Cain dropped Abel. This could be interpreted as a sign of the singer's anger and frustration towards the person/group. The lyrics seem to suggest that the singer has had enough of their voodoo and is about to take matters into their own hands, using violent imagery to drive home their message.
The use of religious references in the song is also significant. In Christian theology, the rapture is a future event in which believers are taken up to heaven, while non-believers are left behind to face God's judgment. Here, the singer sarcastically tells the person/group to hope that they are taken up to heaven during the rapture, before the singer has a chance to deal with them. The reference to Sodom and Gomorrah, two biblical cities that were destroyed by God for their sins, is also significant. The singer seems to be suggesting that the person/group is delivering redemption to a sinful world, much like the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah thought they were living righteous lives.
Overall, the lyrics of The Rapture seem to be a scathing critique of religious manipulation and deception, with the singer warning the person/group that they are about to face the consequences of their actions.
