Puscifer's original name was Umlaut, "a premiere improvisational hardcore band". The name "Puscifer" was first publicized as a fictional band in the first episode of Mr. Show, including Keenan and Adam Jones as members. Jones is not associated with Puscifer otherwise, although artwork by Jones has been featured on Puscifer apparel (the "Your Mom's a Bitch" shirt, specifically). Keenan describes Puscifer as "simply a playground for the various voices in my head, [...] a space with no clear or discernible goals, [...] where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes." Keenan also worked on short films with Ford Englerth and Jeffrey Brooks from Red Rock Entertainment Development; these shorts were done in a similar manner to that of Mr. Show and Tom Waits' Big Time.
Puscifer is "as much a clothing line as it is a band", with the clothing items produced in limited numbers. Keenan collaborated on a leather jacket with Paul Frank. On September 16, 2008, Keenan updated the puscifer.com blog, revealing that the first ever Puscifer store would be opening "hopefully" by October 1 in Jerome, Arizona. Occupying a small space above a tattoo parlor, the store opened on October 3, 2008. In addition to the merchandise available on the band's online store, Keenan has also made available locally roasted coffee, art, and an ever-changing list of limited edition collectibles.

Puscifer Lyrics

Shotgun Betty stoppin' dead at my shoes.
Out to run the train at the railway station,
Shotgun Betty stoppin' dead at my shoes.
(Conquered long dungeons?) and learned the damn alphabet.
I come before you, get to payin' your dues.
Head down to the town to get on this puscifer,
time to roll call, kids hear the school bell ring.
This vagina mine teach ya patient diligence.
Keep the chain-gangs waiting, make a cat-bird sing.
Down this vagina mine...
Down this vagina mine...
Headed down to the town to get on this Puscifer,
time to roll call, kids hear the school bell ring.
This vagina mine teach ya patient diligence.
Keep the chain-gangs waiting, make a cat-bird sing.
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
Down this vagina mine...
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
Down this vagina mine...
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
This vagina mine, one track, tunnel vision now.
The lyrics of Puscifer's song "Vagina Mine" are quite intriguing and hold a variety of meanings. The song starts off with the singer going to work at the railway station, and as he approaches his train, he is stopped by Shotgun Betty, who stands in his way. The next verse continues with the singer talking about how he has "conquered long dungeons" and "learned the damn alphabet" before addressing his listeners directly, telling them to "get to payin' your dues."
The chorus of the song talks about heading down to the town and hearing the school bell ring, with the vagina being the teacher of "patient diligence" that keeps the "chain-gangs waiting" and make the "cat-bird sing." The phrase "vagina mine" itself is used throughout the song, with the rest of the lyrics borrowing from railroad and mining terminology to describe the sexual nature of the song's subject matter.
The lyrics of "Vagina Mine" can be interpreted in many ways, but one possible meaning is the idea of sexual exploration and discovery. The singer has "conquered long dungeons" and "learned the alphabet," which can be seen as metaphors for exploring the female body and learning about the different techniques and methods that can be used to please a partner. The chorus suggests that the experience of exploring the vagina can be a transformative one that teaches patience and perseverance.
Some other possible interpretations of the song's lyrics include the idea of industrialization and mechanization as it applies to relationships and sexuality. The use of railroad and mining terminology can be interpreted as a commentary on how sexuality is often approached in a mechanical or industrial way, something to be "conquered" or "mined" for pleasure. The chorus, with its mention of "chain-gangs" and "cat-birds," adds to this sense of sexual exploration as a kind of labor or work.
