They released their self-titled debut on Arista later that year and then began a touring schedule that took them out with bands like Godsmack, Fuel, and even landed them on Ozzfest.
They have had several successful singles at alternative radio, including “Handslide”, “Caught My Mind” and “Lefty”. When Clive Davis was driven out of Arista in 2000, Pushmonkey left as well. In 2001, the band released El Bitché, which was well received at radio, in the press, and by their fans, now legion.
And then, as the planets and stars came together – it was the Year of the Monkey.

Lie To Me
Pushmonkey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hard to deny it when you smell so much like sin.
The lies I realize when I check your pager
And now I know the price of angels in cages.
I see it in your face.
Stop trying to explain.
Just so much I can take of your truth crashing down.
Why don't you lie to me?
Why don't you just lie to me?
Why don't you lie to me?
So I can think that you are worth it.
don't seem so shocked to see I figured it out.
Its just that often, your motive calls the house.
I can still smell him, the smell of his liquor.
Can't tell you're sorry, I know you think you're sorry.
You keep on talking, but I don't want to hear it.
What do you tell him, do you tell him you feel it?
This time I mean it, I really, really mean it.
I want you to lie to me. I need you to lie to me.
Why can't, Why can't, Why can't,
Why can't you lie to me
The lyrics to Pushmonkey’s “Lie to Me” depict the frustration of a partner who knows they are being cheated on but is still hoping for their partner to deny it and lie to them. The lyrics express the singer’s pain and anger as they confront their partner’s infidelity. Throughout the song, the singer confesses to knowing their partner's whereabouts late at night and smelling the scent of sin on their body. They also confront their partner and ask them to lie because the truth is unbearable.
The line "The price of angels in cages," likely refers to the high cost associated with keeping someone who is good (an angel) restrained and trapped (in a cage). The singer is recognizing that their partner is "good" at heart but is trapped in their own lies and infidelity. The chorus of the song, where the singer repeatedly asks their partner to lie to them, shows how they are struggling to accept the harsh reality of their partner's cheating and maybe hoping that by lying to them, things might turn out better.
Overall, “Lie to Me” portrays a complex moment of confrontation and uncertainty within a romantic relationship, where the truth might hurt but a lie is equally destructive. The song reflects how some people prefer to be lied to or kept in the dark as knowing the truth could be too painful for them to bear.
