On The Sunny Side Of The Street
Quincy Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walked with no one and talked with no one
And I had nothing but shadows
Then one morning you passed
And I brightened at last
Now I greet the day and complete the day
With the sun in my heart
All my worry blew away
When you taught me how to say

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat?
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet

On the sunny side of the street
Grab your street

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Quincy Jones's song Sunny captures the essence of an individual who was once lost in the shadows and darkness of their life, but then somebody came along and changed everything. They changed the way they saw and approached the world, and left an indelible mark on their soul. The song speaks of a transformation that occurred when the persona met someone special who showed them the way to happiness.

The first two lines of the song speak of a life of emptiness and loneliness, with the persona walking without direction or purpose, and having nothing but shadows. But then, one morning, someone came into their life and they brightened up, completing their day by embracing the brightness of the sun in their heart. The chorus echoes the message of the song and encourages the listener to leave their worries behind, to go out into the world, and to embrace the sunny side of the street.

The third verse highlights a pivotal moment of when the persona lost their fear and embraced the possibility of something better. They used to walk in the shade, feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders with nothing but sadness and negativity surrounding them. But the arrival of someone new changed everything, crossing over to the sunny side of the street. The final two lines of the song speak to the richness that exists when we embrace positivity, with being "rich as Rockefeller" and "gold dust at my feet" on the sunny side of the street.

Grab your coat
Grab your hat, baby
Leave your worries on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
On the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat, babe?

Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade, ba-ba-bo
But I'm not afraid, baby
My Rover's crossed over, ay
If I never have a cent, babe
I'd be rich as Rock-e-fellow
With gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street

my Mothers favourite song , she used to sing this to us in The 1950’s Ireland amen ❤

Ella Fitzgerald was simply the best. Cheers also goes out to the songwriting team of Jimmy McHugh (musical composer) and Dorothy Fields (lyricist). They wrote this gem way back in 1930 - Dorothy Fields was a real trail-blazer, as there were very few women doing what she did back in the day. Indeed, both of these talented individuals enjoyed long and very successful careers.

Mama, I have been thinking about you and all the best things about you. The sacrifices you made for us, your 4 kids
All the musical tunes you used to sing around the house.
You were my first teacher and the best mother ever.
I love and miss you.
