Body Language
Róisín Murphy Lyrics

Those rubber bullets don't bounce off you?
Oh, incry, hear it in stereo
I'll cry after everything is done and dusted
I may convince bold and original
Forgive, what's that for when you're heading for the dance floor?
I'm here, go deep with those climb-downs
Branding me a heretic kind of infant-terrible
Drop you like a hot potato, everybody turn a hater
If you hear what your body says, learn body language
If I could speak, I'd call your name
If I could hear what your body says, I wouldn't change it
If you speak over to me
Between false and tragedy lies
A human emotion for hoping it'll turn out alright
Ah, dickens, thicken now then chicken soup
And the way that you turn it will take you to the end of the line
But learn, speak it, that body language
Definition of wordplay, conditional love
You can't contemplate, impossible to separate
One from the other, your mother's, sister's, brother's lover
If you hear what your body says, learn body language
If I could speak, I'd call your name
If I could hear what your body says, I wouldn't change it
If you speak over to me
Tied up for the foreseeable future
Had ended in the 70's science fiction motion picture
Back in the day, don't cut it now anyway
Quite a different animal, don't you wish you'd had a mission
If you hear what your body says, learn body language
If I could speak, I'd call your name
If I could hear what your body says, I wouldn't change it
If you speak over to me
If you hear what your body says, learn body language
If I could speak, I'd call your name
In "Body Language," Róisín Murphy explores the complicated nature of communication, particularly through the contrasts between words and body language. The lyrics point out the limitations of verbal language, asking if the singer has failed to mention that "rubber bullets don't bounce off you," suggesting that the listener is impervious to harm. The line "forgive, what's that for when you're heading for the dance floor?" indicates a desire to move beyond verbal communication and into the realm of physical expression. Later, the lyrics urge the listener to learn body language, which is both more complex than spoken language and more difficult to fake or deceive. The idea of conditional love, which is mentioned in the song, further highlights the idea that communication is often not straightforward, as is the case with many relationships.
Throughout the song, Murphy incorporates a number of wordplay and allusions. The line "infant terrible" is a nod to the French term "enfant terrible," which refers to someone who is unpredictable and unconventional. The line "had ended in the 70's science fiction motion picture" alludes to the idea that the future, as it was imagined in the past, has not necessarily come true. The lyrics also reference Charles Dickens and the phrase "the end of the line," which can be interpreted both literally and as a metaphor for the end of a relationship. Overall, "Body Language" is a complex, thought-provoking exploration of the nuances of communication and the difficulties of expressing oneself fully.
