‘Róisín Machine’ is the next chapter of that ever unfolding, always compelling tale – a seamlessly edited, 10 years in the making collection of tracks produced in collaboration with her Sheffield pal DJ Parrot, at once her most unabashedly dance-floor ready yet deeply autobiographical work to date.
Incapable

It's gone stone cold and you know we should've got it together
Well, it's nice, it's nice to be wanted
But I want you, want you too and never be frightened
Never had a broken heart
Never seen me fall apart
Haven't got a broken dream
Don't know where I get the strength
And I'll go out of my head
I'm not even out of breath
I could go forever, yeah
Never had a broken heart
Am I incapable of love?
Never seen me fall apart
I must be incapable of love
Never had a broken heart
Yet I'm unavailable for love
And I should try and play my part
But I'm incapable
I don't know what I'm doing
Never had a broken heart
I don't know if I can love
In all honesty
I don't know if that's what I'm feeling
Never seen me fall apart
When I've never had my heart broken
Well, I get that there's a sensation
Never had a broken heart
Though I don't know what it means
You might never get to make a connection
Never seen me fall apart
If I don't learn how to feel
But I'm incapable (incapable, incapable)
Haven't got a broken heart
You have got to play your part
What will all the talking do?
I just wanna be with you
Haven't got a broken will
I could never get my fill
Haven't lost the energy
Haven't lost this other me
Haven't lost this other me
Haven't lost this other me
Haven't lost this other me
The lyrics of Róisín Murphy's song "Incapable" are open to interpretation. One way to understand the song is as an expression of the singer's confusion about her own emotions. She sings about a cold weather that represents the current state of her relationship, admitting that they should have made it work. She expresses her desire for the person she's with, but at the same time, she is unsure if she is capable of genuine love. She has never had a broken heart, never fallen apart, and never had crazy dreams. Yet, she is not sure if she loves the person she is with. The repetition of the phrase "incapable of love" in the chorus suggests both frustration and confusion.
Another way to interpret the song is as a critique of societal expectations about what love and relationships should look like. The singer may feel like she is not fitting into the typical mold of a "normal" relationship: she has never had a broken heart, she is not sure if she loves the person she is with, and she is not sure if she is capable of the kind of love that is expected of her. The lines "you have got to play your part / what will all the talking do?" could be seen as a commentary on the pressure to conform to societal norms, even if they don't feel right.
Overall, the lyrics of "Incapable" are introspective and complex, leaving plenty of room for interpretation.
