I'll never turn you down
You turn me on
Don't speak out every meaning
I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me
So don't hold on too tightly
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
Happier now than I've been in the past
Gone are the days
Gone are the tears
That was a girl I used to be
The girl that you now see standing in front of you
Keeps going on
Because she believes
In setting you free
So let me know when you're lonely, babe
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
I turn the other way
I can never turn you down
You turn me on
Don't speak out every meaning
I don't belong to you
Like you don't belong to me
So don't hold on too tightly
There forever be
So let me know when you're lonely, babe
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
(It might be sweet)
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
(If we could be)
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
(Along the way)
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
(That could be okay)
You're always saying
In this cynical thing
Hold me
No ball and chain
I risk my reputation
Just to get a room
You always have the reservation
So come lie down beside me
So let me know when you're lonely, babe
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
(Beside me)
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
(Beside me)
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
(Beside me)
So let me know when you're lonely, babe
(It might be sweet)
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
(If we could be)
Let me know when you're lonely, babe
(Along the way)
Let me know when you're lonely, baby
(That could be okay)
That could be okay
It might be sweet
If we could be
Along the way
That could be okay
Róisín Murphy's Let Me Know is an upbeat, pop-dance track that speaks about a relationship based on no-strings-attached passion. The lyrics revolve around the message of giving space in a relationship and not getting possessive or overwhelming. The lines "I don't belong to you, You don't belong to me, So don't hold on too tightly," make this message loud and clear. The main chorus - "Let me know when you're lonely, babe" - creates an understanding that both parties can be together when their schedules allow, without any obligations holding them back. The song's overall meaning is about enjoying the moment, not controlling the future, and being honest with each other.
The second verse's lines, "Gone are the days, Gone are the tears, That was a girl I used to be," suggests that the singer has moved on from a past where she was perhaps more reliant on love for personal stability. The mood is uplifting, giving the impression that the singer has found liberation in not being tied down by heavy feelings.
The song continues with light-hearted metaphors, such as "You always have the reservation, So come lie down beside me," emphasizing the message of being open and honest about one's intentions without any expectations. The song ends with "That could be okay, It might be sweet, If we could be, Along the way," tying a neatly wrapped bow around the central concept of the song - embracing the moment and not getting lost in a fantasy about the future.
