I Believe I Can Fly
R.ケリー Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms

If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it
I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day (night and day)
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly hoo

See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me, ho oh

If I can see it hoo, then I can be it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day (night and day)
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly
Oh, I believe I can fly hoo

Hey, 'cause I believe in me, oh

If I can see it hoo, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it hey

I believe I can fly hoo
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly (I can fly)
I believe I can fly (I can fly)
I believe I can fly (I can fly) hey

If I just spread my wings (I can fly)
I can fly (I can fly)
I can fly (I can fly) yeah
I can fly (I can fly) hey
If I just spread my wings (I can fly)
I can fly (I can fly)
(I can fly) whoa

(I can fly)
(Hmm, fly, fly, fly)

Overall Meaning

R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" is an inspirational anthem about striving and rising above adversity. The song begins with the singer's past struggles and how he used to doubt himself before finding the meaning of true love and faith in God. Now, he believes that he can achieve his dreams: if he can imagine it, then he can attain it through believing in himself.

Kelly then employs a metaphor of flying to describe the feeling of liberation that comes with having confidence in oneself. He chants, "I believe I can touch the sky," which represents breaking through a glass ceiling or reaching unimaginable heights that were previously beyond his reach. The repetition of the phrase "I believe I can fly" reinforces the idea of continuous faith in oneself and one's capabilities. He encourages others to have the same self-belief and confidence in their abilities.

The second verse touches on those low moments in life when everything seems hopeless and defeating, yet Kelly stresses the importance of persisting and believing in oneself despite the odds. The song's positive message resonates across different cultures, setting it apart as a classic anthem that has been adopted by many motivational speakers and institutions for various purposes.

@@lauraw5183 I mean you could read the lyrics in the song and figure that out, but I’ll break it down for you. The song is about overcoming obstacles in life including self-doubt, hardships, etc.
“I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meaning of true love
I'm leaning on the everlasting arms
If I can see it, then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it”.

“See I was on the verge of breaking down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
first I know it starts inside of me”.

Indeed, as you can see by the lyrics in the song that it is an attempt to inspire those who have had self-doubt, dealing with depression, loneliness, etc ; the song acknowledges that to overcome these hardships that the work will come from inside of you by putting in the work to make the necessary changes, “There are miracles in life I must achieve first I know it starts inside of me”. I argue that this quote in the second passage backs up my argument. I’m sure you can now see lyrics in the first passage as well.

Just to reiterate, my original comment that you were replying to specifically states, separate the Art from the Artist. It seems to me, that you are looking more into the Artist instead of the Art, and therefore, you were not seeing the inspiration in the Art because of the negativity surrounding the Artist.

I really hope you read my comment, think about it and reply back to me especially after I spent that long writing it out lmfao 🤣 😂

Also, because you cannot hear the tone in my voice or see me speaking it please let me stay at the none of my comment represents any negativity or any type of attack against you. Just to be honest I sometimes read comments that way and the person that wrote them did not intend that at all so I like to make that statement when I am replying to someone I do not personally know.

This song and others is a reminder that even people who do terrible things are capable of producing wonderful creations in their lives. This is a timeless musical masterpiece from a man we now now DID do some awful things. And , same as Elvis and David Bowie, today is Kelly's birthday..

@matiaspereira9382

I'll be honest. I still enjoy the song despite knowing R Kelly is an awful person. Trust me. I don't even want to meet him in person but I don't want to condemn things I enjoy just because people I hate are involved

R. Kelly’s art is beautiful and is timeless. You can separate the art from the artist. This song has inspired and helped many people at a low time in life. That’s the power of music.
