Augustine converted from a Manichaean to a Christian after several theological debates with the bishop of Milan St. Ambrose, after being defeated several times Augustine converted and was baptized in 387AD.
This story is ridiculous.
The Bible's canon wasn't even finished and Augustine ran across it? Even when the Bible was finalized there would have been very few in circulation. Definitely not enough to "run into" when walking down the street.

You may have not intended for this video to be taken seriously. So I apologize ahead of time. But I don't think Dr. Sproul 'debunked' Augustine's conversion at all. Augustine, as all God's elect are, was converted by Christ's atoning work and indwelled by the Spirit of God at conversion. God decrees all sorts of means to bring that conversion about. That's not the same thing as when immature and ignorant people 'lucky dip' thru scripture looking for a 'sign' or prophecy. Not the same thing.

I encourage you to consider this, brother. There’s a difference between practicing “lucky dipping” as a professing Christian seeking God’s will and letting the pages of the Bible fall where they may as an unbelieving person who knows nothing. One is about the foolish and lazy spiritual practices of immature Christians, and the other is about God’s mercy and grace in conversion. I do not believe RC is contradicting himself here at all. God by grace converted Paul through a vision of the resurrected Christ, but it would be bad spiritual practice if we all waited for a vision of the resurrected Christ for ourselves and our unbelieving neighbors. We should rejoice that while human beings are called to follow the rules and practices given to us through God’s word, God can make exceptions all He wants as along as they don’t contradict Himself. Augustine’s conversion should be a source of wonder and joy at the mercy and means of our God, while not being a lesson on how to practice our faith,. I don’t think RC considered Augustine’s conversion as such, as evident by the later sermon.
Either way, there’s a difference between a brother in error and a false brother. I’d be interested in the main reasons you don’t like Augustine and whether you think he was of faith or not.

If God himself tells you to pick up the Bible and read it, it is no longer a lucky dipping.
Lucky dipping is where it is you, who decide to dip different random places from the Bible with an expect to get an answer or revelation from it.
