Hope
R.E.M. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You want to go out Friday
And you want to go forever
You know that it sounds childish
That you've dreamed of alligators
You hope that we are with you
And you hope you're recognized
You want to go forever
You see it in my eyes
I'm lost in the confusion
And it doesn't seem to matter
You really can't believe it
And you hope it's getting better

You want to trust the doctors
Their procedure is the best
But the last try was a failure
And the intern was a mess
And they did the same to Matthew
And he bled till Sunday night
They're saying don't be frightened
But you're weakened by the sight of it
You lock into a pattern
And you know that it's the last ditch
You're trying to see through it
And it doesn't make sense
But they're saying don't be frightened
And they're killing alligators
And they're hog-tied and accepting of
The struggle

You want to trust religion
And you know it's allegory
But the people who are followers
Have written their own story
So you look up to the heavens
And you hope that it's a spaceship
And it's something from your childhood
You're thinking don't be frightened

You want to climb the ladder
You want to see forever
You want to go out Friday
And you want to go forever
And you want to cross your DNA
To cross your DNA with something reptile
And you're questioning the sciences
And questioning religion
You're looking like an idiot
And you no longer care
And you want bridge the schism
A built-in mechanism to protect you
And you're looking for salvation
And you're looking for deliverance
You're looking like an idiot
And you no longer care
Because you want to climb the ladder
You want to go forever

And you want to go out Friday
You want to go forever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of R.E.M.'s song "Hope" present a picture of someone who is struggling to find their place in the world. The opening lines show that the singer desires to go out Friday, to experience life without limitations. However, this yearning seems to have a deeper meaning, as they hope for recognition and acceptance from their peers. The reference to dreaming of alligators is a metaphor for their fears of the unknown and dangers that may lurk ahead.

The song continues with the singer's struggle to trust the medical profession after a failed attempt to help a friend. They seek solace in religion, but the doubts they have about the stories of followers don't allow them to fully embrace it. The ending lines talk about their desire to "climb the ladder" and "bridge the schism" and a willingness to look like an idiot in the process. Their ultimate goal is to find salvation, deliverance, and a way to go forever.

Their best album

@fredh1720

Lol I think it's their worst. So many songs it's impossible to care about.

@matthewowen2182

@@fredh1720 I think you should revisit it, so many great songs, Falls to climb, Diminished, Parakeet, Walk Unafraid, sad Professor, Suspicion,etc the only the first 2 songs are weak

@potvin709

@@fredh1720 this comment makes no sense...there are only 2 more tracks than Automatic For the People (which you've got the artwork there for your pfp).

@_wormlet

@@potvin709 I don't agree with him, but his comment made perfect sense. He said that there are so many songs it's impossible to care about, i.e. there are a lot of songs he doesn't care about, despite his best efforts. I think you read it as him saying there were too many songs on the album.

@fredh1720

@@_wormlet You are correct. Although I would also say given there's only two here that are sub-four minutes, I also think that's too many songs in general. Not only does the whole thing overstay its welcome, but each song individually starts to feel like a slog.

@matthewowen2182 Personally I can't stand Sad Professor. I quite like the lyrics, but I don't like how they're delivered in that weird staccato style. I also think the instrumental just sounds like a demo version of Be Mine. I like all the other songs you mentioned (except Walk Unafraid, which is one of the weakest they ever did IMO), and I don't mind saying that I have warmed slightly to this album since buying the deluxe version. I still believe it's their worst, but there are moments of real beauty, even if the whole thing wasn't fully worked out.
