Welcome To My Nightmare
R.L. Stine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't stop the voices in my head
There's something underneath my bed
Did I open the closet door
How did that clown get on the floor
I shouldn't watch to much TV
Feels like the walls are closing in on me I tell myself it's just a dream
And then I wake up and
SCREAM
Was once a fantasy because reality
And not it's killng me
Welcome to my Nightmare
I don't know what to do
To rid my mind of you

But it won't go away so
Welcome to my Nightmare

Overall Meaning

R.L. Stine's Welcome to my Nightmare is a hauntingly poignant tale of a broken home. The repeated phrase "welcome to my fucking broken home" sets a tone of despair and anger. It's evident that the singer of the song doesn't like this place, and these walls are hiding all the shit that goes on inside. These lyrics are an analogy to the secrets that exist within the walls of a house that can destroy relationships and families. The next two lines "Can you feel the bliss? Can you taste the paradise?" are almost sarcastic, as if inviting the listener to experience the false sense of happiness that has been created in this dysfunctional household.

The line "I'm looking for the cheapest place to buy a smile" is one of the most poignantly evocative in the song. It's an expression of how the singer is trying to find a way to cope and escape the sadness that surrounds them. The chorus "This is my, this is my home. We're breaking down, we're breaking down" is a desperate cry for help, as if there is no escaping the cycle of abuse and heartbreak that exists in this household. The line "Where you stand is where you'll end" is indicative that the cycle may not be broken in the future generations to come.
