Just Because
R. Kelly & Nona Gaye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can take a hammer
And knock yourself right out
You can hear a whisper
And turn it into a shout
You can do all kinds of things
But be it understood...
Just because you can don't mean you should
You can spend a life time
Doing wicked deeds
You can pull the crops up
Go and plant yourself some weeds
You can have a true love
And say it ain't no good...
But just because you can don't mean you should

I think we will agree
It's reciprocity
'Cause it's been tried
And it's been found
What goes, comes around

Now you can heed my wise words
Or you can let them fall
You can try to walk away
From the writing on the wall
You can want and wish for

A second childhood...
But just because you can don't mean you should

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to R. Kelly and Nona Gaye's song "Just Because" convey a message about the consequences of our actions and choices. The song begins with the idea that just because we have the ability or power to do something, it doesn't necessarily mean that we should. The metaphorical use of a hammer represents the destructive force of our actions. It suggests that we have the capability to harm ourselves or others, but it is important to remember that having the power to do something doesn't justify doing it.

The lyrics then touch upon the concept of choosing to engage in negative behavior or making poor decisions, despite knowing better. It talks about how we can spend a lifetime doing wicked deeds or sabotaging our own happiness by planting metaphorical weeds instead of nurturing positive relationships and experiences. The line about having true love but considering it no good implies how we sometimes undermine the good things in our lives out of fear or self-sabotage. Again, the message is clear: just because we have the capability to make certain choices doesn't mean we should make them.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the concept of karma or cause and effect. The lyrics suggest that our actions have consequences and that what goes around eventually comes back around. It emphasizes the idea of reciprocity and reminds us to consider the repercussions of our choices.

In the final verse, the lyrics offer the wisdom of heeding the advice mentioned earlier or ignoring it and walking away from accountability. The "writing on the wall" symbolizes the signs or warnings that are present in life, indicating the potential outcomes of our decisions. The line about wanting a second childhood implies the desire to escape responsibility, but once again reinforces the idea that just because we have the desire or capability to do something doesn't mean it is the right course of action.

Overall, "Just Because" sends a cautionary message about considering the consequences of our decisions, understanding that our actions have ripple effects, and making choices that align with our higher values and personal growth.
