Friends
RAYE Lyrics

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Uh, uh

What's up with all the "girl hate girl" shit? Uh, uh
It's like we never learn no lessons, uh, uh
What's up with all the beef and the bad vibes? Uh, uh
What's up with all the teeth in your fake smile? Uh, uh

And why can't (why can't)
We just (we just)
Let it go? Just let it go now
I guess (I guess) we won't ever know

We could've been, we could've been, we could've been friends
We could've been, well maybe not, well maybe not best friends
But I would have fucked with you
And you know you would have too
(Oh well, oh well, oh well)
We could've been, we could've been, we could've been cool
We could've been, we could've been, well, maybe not that cool
But I would've fucked with you
And you know you would've too
Oh well, oh well, uh

Why is it if I'm not a boy I'm an enemy? Uh, uh
This damn mentality is killin' me, uh, uh, uh
And don't get me wrong we can all be that
Forgive me for tryna believe that

And why can't (why can't)
We just (we just)
Let it go? Just let it go
I guess (I guess) we won't ever know

We could've been, we could've been, we could've been friends
We could've been, well maybe not, well maybe not best friends
But I would've fucked with you
And you know you would've too
(Oh well, oh well, oh well)
We could've been, we could've been, we could've been cool
We could've been, we could've been, well, maybe not that cool
But I would've fucked with you
And you know you would've too
(Oh well, oh well)

Can we be chill for a second?
'Cause we too young to be stressin', yeah
I think we both learned our lesson
We could have been, we could have been, could've been

We could've been, we could've been, we could've been friends
We could've been, well maybe not, well maybe not best friends
But I would've fucked with you
And you know you would've too
(Oh well, oh well, oh well)
We could've been, we could've been, we could've been cool
We could've been, we could've been, well maybe not that cool
But I would've fucked with you
And you know you would've too
(Oh well, oh well)

We could've been, we could've been friends
(Oh well, oh well)
But I would've fucked with you

And you know you would've too
(Oh well, oh well, oh well)

Overall Meaning

The song "Friends" by British singer Raye sheds light on the negative energy and behaviour of women towards each other in today's society. Raye starts the song by asking why there's "girl hate girl shit" and why girls can't help but engage in beef and bad vibes towards one another. She wonders why girls fake smiles so easily while masking their true feelings towards one another. Raye seems disappointed at the fact that instead of learning from past lessons, women tend to repeat and perpetuate vicious cycles of hate and negativity towards each other.

In the chorus, Raye expresses regret at what could have been but was never allowed to be because of the negative energy portrayed by females towards each other. Raye had hoped that she and the other women could have been friends, or maybe not best friends, but just cool and supportive of each other. The second verse highlights the idea that women still face discrimination in certain areas because of their gender. Raye seems to believe that society has a dangerous mindset, which categorizes women as enemies if they aren't men, contributing to female hate, and leaving women unsure where they stand.

Finally, Raye pleads with women to be more relaxed and less stressed, as they are too young to be facing these types of problems. The song manifests a powerful message of sisterhood by highlighting how all women face similar struggles and confront similar biases in society. Raye urges women to support and love each other, as it paves a path for mutual growth and progress.

I love the message of this. It's like why everyone got to be so fake, so bitchy. Why can't we live a simple life without tearing each other's down for benefits that isn't truly who we are. Raye is being real.
