The trilled 'r' was always a problem for me when I first started learning Spanish in High School. Now, after learning Arabic, they're not a problem for me, because Arabic has a vowel system where the consonants are gemenite, the r becomes trilled. This makes it easier for me to practice and learn Spanish now.

In Arabic, you'll see the consonant with a shaddeh, رّ، the shaddeh is used to indicate the doubling of the consonant in pronunciation. It was difficult for me at first but I got a grasp of it after constantly practicing.

In Spanish, you'll see 'rr' in nouns, maybe verbs, adjectives, etc. Arabic 101 cured the problem of pronunciation for me.

I learnt the short 'r' by saying 'butter' fast and then isolating the 'tt' in it as that is synonymous to the rolled r sound. I could never trill though. The second technique for the trilled r is fantastic. For the first time I feel I can make a distinct trill although takes a bit of practice. Thanks!

This is an interesting technique. If it's not working, you probably haven't gotten it fast enough. By the time you do, it should start like a old engine sputtering as it starts.

I am Vietnamese and I remember I used to be able to roll the R's perfectly the Spanish way when I was a child. My mom taught me and I would do the sound for fun occasionally. But then I grew up and tried to learn English, Japanese, Korean and French with each language's own R pronunciations - and now I am trying to learn Spanish only to find out that old ability is completely gone!! What helped me with both the tapped and trilled R (alveolar tap and trill) was to focus on mastering the trill first, because the tap is mostly a cinch after that. (My examples are in Latin, my current language study, but work perfectly for Spanish, Albanian or any language with an emphatic trill))—
Try the alveolar ‘R’ three times a day, four ways—
1) first as a trill without vocal sound, just whirring tongue vibrations—like a kid pretending to have moth wings: R.r.r.r.r.r.r.r.r . . . for 15 seconds.
2) then vocalize the trill, with a musical delivery, up and down like a melody, with “R” its only word: 🎶 R.r.r.r.r.r.r.r. . . . another 15 seconds.
3) then as it appears in a real word, sandwiched between vowels, as in acerrimo, asperrima, erratus, ferrum, incorruptum, marra, narrabant, perrumpo, turrigerum, varro.
4) then try tapping the ‘r,’ especially where it sits adjacent to a consonant; either preceding or following a consonant requires some lingual gymnastics, as in arbitrarius, barbarorum, circumscribo, gradior, miratrix, perscriptor, propriorum, quartarius, sacratur and transire.
Those short exercises take less than one minute, three times every day. After five months, stop exercising for a few weeks so your brain begins missing the routine. Then one day, casually read some material en Espanol. ¡Tu 'R' alveolar sonará como Frida y Diego en Cuernavaca!

for some people having issues, its not moving your tongue up and down but basically vibrating it. Don't focus on vibrating just the front of your tongue, vibrating the base/entirety of your tongue will vibrate the tip of your tongue the correct way. Its not like the french R where you kinda vibrate the back of your throat/ upper back mouth, but do it below. Make sure your tongue is slightly curved upwards, barely behind your front teeth on the ridge so you can get the more predominant rolled R sound

Chinese, grew up in USA, Spanish is my fourth language. Took me a year to learn how to roll my R's. Just keep practising speaking Spanish, eventually you (or rather, your tongue) will get it. One day I said the word "rojo" with a trilled R and even I could not believe it! LOL

In Dutch we use the rolling r that is at the back of your throat, which makes this a very tricky one to learn because automatically my r's shift back until it's from there again😂 But my bf is Spanish so I will keep practising until I've got it right. Thank you for these tips!

That second technique - saying the two syllables separately over and over until your tongue magically trills - actually worked pretty darn well! It's still a work in progress but at keast there's something closer to a trill, where before there wasn't anything...nada. For about an hour, nonstop, I just did "per-ro" endlessly and then a modest trill happened. I continue to walk around the house practicing, and my family thinks I'm nuts :)

I've never been able to roll my r's before, but after spending some time doing the "camarón caramelo" practice so I could get used to the "r" sound, and then putting extra emphasis on that sound, I actually got it!

You have to sigh first and then touch your tounge to that area. It worked for me. If you really can't, search rice in spanish online and say that. I just learned it with my little brother. Hope it helps!

Consistent focused practice is how you learn anything. Juggling is a bitch but ask me how I learned and that’s what I’ll tell you. Consistency is key. 5 minutes each day is all it takes

As an Australian English speaker, I have had to brute force the R as I've begun to learn Spanish. We don't do really do much tongue rolling in Aussie English.

The second technique is a great step forward for me. The rrrrrolling trill is hard, but the two fast soft R's technique is not hard and with practice I should get more fluent. Thank you!

I'm from Northern Territory Australia in my native language which we speak is ngen'gi tyemirri, majority of words are mostly made up of double "rr's" I found Spanish and Italian easy to learn

I've been trying for like an hour but I'm not gonna give up, gonna try to do it once a day and see if I ever get there lol. So far the second technique is kinddda working for me , but with the first technique I can't for the life of me figure out any position or shape of my tongue that makes it trill when I push air out

It's worth mentioning that you need a relaxed tongue and mouth for this. You can't force it to happen. That's what a lot of people think you have to do.

I learned the soft r pretty quickly, it's the trilled r that I have problem with. A few years agi I wondered how people were able to purr like a cat, th is seems related to it.

Thanks. I somehow figured out how to manually do the French ‘r’ first (to be fair, I picked up Spanish quite a long time after starting French) so now I have a bit of a habit of pronouncing a rolled ‘r’ like the French ‘r’.

I knew I could never roll my r's the proper way because I always faked it with the back of my tongue/throat. People said it sounded the same or that I was doing it but I knew it was wrong. I am definitely going to practice this!

I had a roommate whose last name was Sierra, and she taught me to roll my R's using her last name. Honestly, it took about 2 days of me saying, "Sierra, See-air-ra, See-air-r-ra," before it magically turned into, "Sierrrra!" Of course, I said her surname thousands of times, like, basically the whole time I was awake for 2 solid days lol. Still, somehow I liked saying Sierra better than perro, & it worked. I still practice using her name when I haven't spoken Spanish in a while & I can't quite roll my R's again, it never takes all that long nowadays ;)

I'm teaching my granddaughter Spanish and was trying to show my her how to roll her r's,
but since I don't remember ever learning how to do it, I was having a tough time explaining, I just do it.
I was trying to get her to make a motor sound, but that's like still like explaining how to breath.

Thank you so much for this video...seeing a close up of how your tongue is supposed to move while you are trilling actually showed me that I was doing it wrong ...before, I would put the tip of my tongue to the back of my mouth and roll it all the way across the roof of my mouth...i believe when it rolled across the ridges on the roof of my mouth i would hear the rrrrrrr sound ...however i was only able to achieve it when i was actually saying a word and only for a short time (until i reached the next syllable or letter in the actual word) ...like perro or pregunta.... my goal is to be able to roll my tongue independently as well and for as long as i want to ....so I started practicing different movements in the mirror until I was able to do one that mimics that movement in your video ...i got close ...so now i will continue to practice that movement until it becomes faster and longer and i can actually achieve trilling. The French r is a lot harder. It took me months. I'm coming back to this for Arabic. German I found has several r's that aren't found in English. The pronounce words like orange and restaurant exactly like French.

I've always been able to roll my R's but with a tight lip. Now trying to do that while learning spanish can be difficult when saying words like 'tres'. I need to rewire my brain to say it with a loose/relaxed lip. Anyway, your vid was great. I'll be trying some of these techniques

I have been doing this whenever it occurs to me since about the beginning of March. Between this and singing the erre sound my accent is doing SO MUCH BETTER. That "las ruedas" is the hardest part. IDK why.

I think I'm intermediate in English becuase I was only studying by myself I don't have a great teacher like you ; Además Yo Amo mucho el Inglés Americano y la culture Americana lo cual me ha ayudado mucho a mejorar mi inglés (the point it was sometimes very bored and so hard for me have learned that way ) But worth worth it! now I'm very happy because I'm available to speak with real native speakers from your country( face to face ) although I know my grammar is not perfect but i dont mind becuase: Sólo trato que fluya... y entonces sé que Tú eres muy bueno en Spanish dude.
