We Do It
R & J Stone Lyrics

That's great, it starts with an earthquake
Birds and snakes, and aeroplanes
And Lenny Bruce is not afraid

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs
Don't mis-serve your own needs
Speed it up a notch, speed, grunt, no, strength
The ladder starts to clatter
With a fear of height, down, height
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
And a government for hire and a combat site
Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry
With the Furies breathing down your neck

Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped
Look at that low plane, fine, then
Uh oh, overflow, population, common group
But it'll do, save yourself, serve yourself
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed
Tell me with the Rapture and the reverent in the right, right
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam fight, bright light
Feeling pretty psyched

It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine

Six o'clock, T.V. hour, don't get caught in foreign tower
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn
Lock him in uniform, book burning, bloodletting
Every motive escalate, automotive incinerate
Light a candle, light a motive, step down, step down
Watch your heel crush, crush, uh oh
This means no fear, cavalier, renegade and steering clear
A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline

It's the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)
I feel fine (I feel fine)

It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

The other night I drifted nice continental drift divide
Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein
Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs
Birthday party, cheesecake, jellybean, boom
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam but neck, right, right

It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)

It's the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

Overall Meaning

"We Do It" by R & J Stone is a high-energy power pop song with catchy hooks and a driving beat. It describes a chaotic world where earthquakes, hurricanes, and other disasters are becoming increasingly common. Lenny Bruce, a controversial comedian who was known for his explicit language and social commentary, is mentioned as someone who is unafraid in the face of these dramatic events. The lyrics suggest that people should focus on their own needs and speed up their actions because the world is rapidly changing.

The song continues with a list of events and actions that seem to be escalating out of control. The imagery references everything from wire fires and government corruption to sports tournaments and book burning. The chorus repeats the phrase "It's the end of the world as we know it," suggesting that the world is coming to some sort of catastrophic end. However, the singer also says "I feel fine," suggesting that even in the midst of chaos and destruction, there is still hope and optimism.

The song is a complex collage of images and ideas that suggest a world in turmoil. Its rapid-fire delivery and upbeat tempo create a sense of urgency that reflects the content of the lyrics. Despite its dire predictions, the song ultimately suggests that people can adapt and find a way to survive even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Fantastic performance. What a wonderful voice Joanna had. Sad loss. The part where she flies... 'Hey Baby...' brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Russell Oliver Stone and Joanne Stone for this simple masterpiece. This is Jan 8, 2021. Man, this song still resonates today! Nothing in the world gonna stop us...To my very special one. God Bless you all.

A beautiful song and performance. It's one of those where you wonder if they'll get the high notes - and then they do [it]! What a pair of great vocalists.
That [early '76] was a magical time period for me - never to be repeated unfortunately.
I could do without Steve Wright's 'downbeat' comments, but each to his own...

More Time Needed

R&J Stone were the English/American husband and wife duo, Russell Oliver Stone and Joanne Stone.[1] The pair were originally members of James Last's British Choir for a number of years. They had a hit single in the mid 1970s with their self penned song "We Do It".[2][3] The track was produced by Phil Swern. Some time after their hit, Russell Stone decided that he did not want to remain as a singer, and preferred to concentrate on producing and writing for his wife.[1] Their second album did not do well and a third album, although recorded, was never released.

Joanne Stone died of a brain tumour in 1979.[4]

Russell Stone later went to Munich to work with the Icelander Thorir Baldursson. Stone is a recovered alcoholic and has released three solo albums, Love Aspects (2013), Groove Aspects (2014) and Devotional Aspects (2016), after spending years out of the music industry.[1]

I remember this so well.
It was a hit in early 1976.
Another song around this time was "Afternoon Delight" .
Lots of one hit wonders in the mid seventies.
Every song brings back memories.

I always loved this song. Great live rendition. I read in the paper today that Joanne was the voice on Paper Lace's hit 'Billy don't be a hero' ("Come back and make me your wife" etc.). RIP Joanne.
