Questions
Rage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And did they teach you love?
Yes, they did but poor and hidden.
And did they teach you death?
Yes, they did but just a part of it.

What does that mean, a part of it?
It means that they taught us how to kill
They taught it and they practiced it
They never told us how to die
Death's place in life and how to face it,
See how sad they end their lives

And if I ask these questions
What would you say if the answer's given the same time?
And if you know these questions
Why can't you see that it's more than just a state of mind?

And did they teach to hate?
Yes, they taught it and they stirred it
On the so-called enemy
Not on the own misery.

What did they do with their own lives?
They only did what you'd expect
After the lessons they had had,
They've never seen the other way
The might freedom in their minds
They will never reach their size.

And if I ask these questions
What would you say if the answer's given the same time?
And if you know these questions
Why can't you see that it's more than just a state of mind?

In a way we're data banks
Information collectors
And all worse that we contend
Is a false program inside
We just need to get it right
Check it out what you have learned.

And you will learn to love
You will even learn to die
And you will learn 'bout hate
In a way that is meant.

And you will ask these questions

Overall Meaning

The song Questions by Rage is a social commentary on the teachings and values that are passed down to us by our parents and society. The lyrics ask questions about the lessons we have learned, particularly about love, death, and hate. The first verse of the song asks if we were taught about love and death. The answer is yes, but the love we learned about was poor and hidden, and death was only taught as a part of killing, not as a natural part of life. The chorus questions why we can't see that these are more than just a state of mind, and that our experiences and lessons shape the way we perceive them.

The second verse talks about hate and its origins. We are taught to hate our enemies, rather than focusing on our own misery. The song continues by criticizing the false programs that are instilled in us, and the need to question and relearn the lessons we have learned. The final verse offers a glimmer of hope, as the lyrics suggest that we can learn to love and even learn to die, in a way that is meant for us.

Overall, Questions is a powerful song that encourages us to examine the lessons we've learned and their impact on our lives. It urges listeners to question their own beliefs and values, and to consider whether they have been influenced by societal norms or their own experiences.
