The Lammas Lands
Rain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

I imagine those pilgrims to the New England at their first harvest festival - the Lammas
You can still see it as they would have done - the wild, pagan and beautiful new land

Wish you were here
RICK

"That was the first card. I'm following his trail - a little cold now
"Those sky-blue eyes that look right at you"
They saw all this...But it's just another old world now... The Lammas...
Why does it make me think of "The Crows in the Cornfield" - Van Gogh's suicide note?...
"Taxi for Mr. Jaeger!"
"Time to go."

Turning away from the land of my blood
A cold refugee on a staggering ocean
We stood upon the shore in the talons of winter
To raise a cup of wine
For those we left behind
Born to die in regions of sorrow

Crimson and gold in the Valley of Oak
The traces of dawn are rising from the river
The sun scatters stars on the shimmering leaves
Above the singing cornfield
Burns in glory, burns with hope
The harvest of our dreams
The harvest of our dreams

I still dream of the pain of the life in the streets
The grey, empty eyes of the weary and broken
All of them were lost in the wake of my vessel
The lesson of my soul
To learn to live again
I am born once more in reach of tomorrow

The touch of this world is like sun on my skin
And the light of this world is cornflower blue
The world that was promised in the book of creation
Fades the faint horizon to promises of joy
This land is for our children
This land that fell to me
We did not come to conquer
We came here to be free

And the new king is crowned and Elysium found
And his throne in the meadow is glowing with flowers
We are reaping our fortune, the blessing of life
And raising up our harvest
Of bread and honey wine
We hold it to the sky
Into the perfect sky

Into the perfect heavens
Into the perfect sky

Overall Meaning

In "The Lammas Lands," Rain paints a vivid picture of the first harvest festival in New England, called Lammas. The song transports us back in time to the arrival of pilgrims in this wild, pagan, and beautiful new land. The lyrics express a sense of longing and nostalgia for a time and place that no longer exist. Rain imagines the pilgrims experiencing the beauty of the Lammas lands, but acknowledges that it has now become just another part of the old world.

The mention of Van Gogh's suicide note, "The Crows in the Cornfield," adds another layer of complexity to the song. It juxtaposes the beauty and hope of the Lammas lands with the darker themes of mortality and fleeting happiness. The line "Taxi for Mr. Jaeger!" and "Time to go." suggests a departure or farewell, perhaps symbolizing the pilgrims' departure from their homeland and their journey to the new world.

The second verse explores the feelings of being a stranger in a new land, a cold refugee on a staggering ocean. The talons of winter symbolize the harshness and challenges faced in this new territory. Yet, there is still a sense of hope and unity as they raise a cup of wine to toast those they left behind. The crimson and gold in the Valley of Oak represent the beauty and abundance of nature, with the sun scattering stars on the shimmering leaves. It speaks of a bountiful harvest, both in the literal sense and in terms of dreams and aspirations.

The final verse reflects on the pain and hardships of life in the streets, and the transformation and rebirth that comes with starting anew. The touch and light of this world are described as sun on the skin and cornflower blue, creating a sense of warmth and brightness. The song concludes with a celebration of their newfound freedom and the blessings of life, as the new king is crowned and Elysium (a paradise or state of bliss) is found. They reap their fortunes and raise a harvest of bread and honey wine, holding it up to the perfect sky and perfect heavens.

Overall, "The Lammas Lands" is a beautifully poetic and introspective song that explores themes of longing, departure, hope, and the pursuit of a better life.

Rain... Back in '07 I stumbled across you via a genesis news forum.. I was known as VOA. I bought and advertised this magnificent CD, I even purchased your book of poetry. We did correspond via email.
This album is still after all these years in my top 5 and I think of you often esp when I was recovering from surgery & flying home from NYC not knowing what future lay ahead for me.... When I feel down I listen to your voice and suddenly things seems ok. ♥️

Yep, I have listened to this one as well when it appeared. It's a brilliant majestic masterpiece and an heroic journey of mind, body and soul. I recommend also the Ragnarök - Ragnarök (1976) album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxZ69T6Eewk
