Butterfly
Rajaton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I stretch them open and let them dry.
I haven't seen this world before,
But I'm excused, I'm a butterfly.
Sweet is the touch of your newborn wings,
We fly in circles and play with the sun.
We haven't seen this world before,
Love me, love me on the leaves,
Before we say goodbye.
Love me, kiss me with the breeze,
You will be my lullaby,
Tomorrow I'll die.
Tomorrow I'll die,
Tomorrow I'll die,
You'll be my lullaby.
Love me, kiss me with the breeze,
Kiss me with the breeze,
Kiss me with the breeze,
Kiss me with the breeze.
Love me, love me on the leaves,
Love me, love me,
Love me, love me on the leaves,
Before we say goodbye.
Love me, kiss me with the breeze,
You'll be me lullaby,
Tomorrow I'll die.
Sweet is the wind as it gently blows,
The day away, and the nighttime comes.
Great are the wonders that silence shows.
I fall asleep, and I dream of the sun,
And my butterfly.
The song Butterfly by Rajaton is a beautiful and poetic expression of the transition from one phase of life to another. As the first stanza portrays, the singer is experiencing a metamorphosis, like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. The sound of their new-formed wings is sweet, and they stretch them open to let them dry. They are entering a new world that they have never seen before, and although they may be inexperienced, they are excited to explore their newfound freedom. The butterfly symbolizes transformation and represents the singer's journey towards self-discovery.
The butterfly is not alone; in the second stanza, there is mention of another butterfly. They fly in circles and play with the sun, both creatures in awe of the beauty of the world around them. Together, they are experiencing life in a way that they never have before, and the sky is so fair, bright, and blue; it is almost as if they are seeing it for the first time. The song expresses the idea that love and connection are essential parts of the human experience, and it is only through the relationships we form that we can truly appreciate the beauty of the world.
The final stanza brings in a bittersweet note, as the butterfly acknowledges its own mortality. The image of falling asleep and dreaming of the sun and the butterfly serves to remind the listener that all good things come to an end. The butterfly asks to be loved and kissed before it dies, needing the love and attention of those around it to feel fulfilled in its brief existence. The song is a reminder to appreciate life and the love of those around us while we can, as everything is temporary.

I figured out what makes this song so beautiful. It's that the lead sings her part effortlessly. She doesn't try to hit the high notes, she just lets them flow through her. I've heard covers that aren't as good, and I wondered why. It's because the lead was just trying too hard. This song is about just singing...that's all to it!

The lead singer is Essi Wuorela, and the song was written for Rajaton, so the composer knew what she could do! But the accompanying singing is perfect too.

I have loved this song since I first heard it. When I heard this song for the first time 10 or so years ago it reminded me of my good friend that passed away too young but then this year my daughter Kathryne passed at the age of 27 of cancer and she is my true butterfly 🦋
