Pohja loimuja viskoo
Kansa kartanon hiljaisen
Yösydän untaan kiskoo
Ääneti kuu käy kulkuaan
Puissa lunta on valkeanaan
Kattojen päällä on lunta
Tonttu ei vain saa unta
Ladosta tulee, hankeen jää
Harmaana uksen suuhun
Vanhaan tapaansa tirkistää
Kohti taivasta kuuhun
Katsoo metsää, min hongat on
Tuulensuojana kartanon
Miettivi suuntaan sataan
Ainaista ongelmataan
Vaiti metsä on, alla jään
Kaikki elämä makaa
Koski kuohuvi yksinään
Humuten metsän takaa
Tonttu puoleksi unissaan
Ajan virtaa on kuulevinaan
Tuumii, minne se vienee
Missä sen lähde lienee
Pakkasyö on, ja leiskuen
Pohja loimuja viskoo
Kansa kartanon hiljaisen
Aamuhun unta kiskoo
Ääneti kuu käy laskemaan
Puissa lunta on valkeanaan
Kattojen päällä on lunta
Tonttu ei vain saa unta
The lyrics of Rajaton's "Tonttu" describe a cold, wintry night, as the people of a quiet manor are lulled to sleep by the darkness of the night. The moon quietly moves across the sky, casting a white light upon the snow-covered trees and roofs of the manor. However, the tonttu, or elf, cannot sleep, unable to find rest in his age-old problem. The tonttu is described as peeking out from the barn into the snow, gazing up at the moon, and pondering the direction of time and the source of its flow. The forest is silent, and life is at a standstill, with the sound of rushing water the only thing that can be heard in the background. The tonttu is half asleep, listening to the flow of time before the lyrics return to describe the quiet night.
This song uses imagery to depict the stillness of a frozen winter night, with the tonttu being the only character to notice the world around it. The tonttu is the focus of the song, and while it is surrounded by the quietness of the night, it is restless, unable to find peace in its never-ending problem. The song is a reminder that even in the stillness of winter, life is not without its troubles, and sometimes we must find ways to cope with them in order to find peace.

@Hybridancer
This has always been my favourite "Christmas" song. I understand why people connect this with Christmas, but for me it's more about traditional Finnish folklore. Gnomes were told to take care of your house and it's surroundings, even the sauna had it's own kind of a gnome to care for it.
This piece has such a strong atmosphere and lovely poetry, and this version is just hypnotic!
